Chapter 2 - The Gaslighting Husband

Michael came home three hours later.

He slammed the front door so hard the pictures rattled.

I was sitting in the dark living room, sipping a glass of wine.

“Evelyn! Where are you?” he yelled.

I didn't answer.

He stormed into the room and flipped on the harsh overhead light.

“Are you insane?” he screamed.

“The hospital just called. They cancelled Mom’s pre-op appointment.”

“They said her payment bounced.”

I took a slow sip of my wine.

“I know. I cancelled it.”

Michael’s face turned purple.

“You have no right! She’s in pain!”

“She needs that surgery, Evelyn!”

“And you threw a tantrum because she made a simple comment about Olivia?”

“She’s an old woman. She’s traditional!”

“You’re overreacting and being completely hysterical.”

There it was.

The gaslighting.

The attempt to make me feel crazy for protecting my own child.

I set the wine glass down.

“Am I overreacting, Michael?”

“Because I think I’m underreacting.”

He scoffed, running a hand through his hair.

“Oh, please. It was just a comment about the family name.”

“You’re taking it out of context.”

“Call the bank right now and authorize the transfer.”

I looked him dead in the eye.

“Which transfer, Michael?”

“The $15,000 for the surgery?”

“Or the $120,000 you stole from our daughter?”

All the color drained from his face in a single second.

He took a step back, hitting the edge of the coffee table.

His mouth opened, but no sound came out.

The arrogant, screaming man from ten seconds ago was gone.

Replaced by a terrified little boy caught stealing from the cookie jar.

“I... I don't know what you're talking about,” he stammered.

“Tyler’s educational support,” I quoted softly.

“It’s funny.”

“I didn’t know a six-year-old’s education required wire transfers to a casino resort in Vegas.”

“Or a luxury car dealership in Sarah’s name.”

He swallowed hard.

“Evelyn, let me explain.”

“It wasn't like that.”

“Mom was in debt. Bad debt.”

“She made some bad investments.”

“If she went bankrupt, she would have lost the house.”

“The house I grew up in!”

I stood up.

“So you stole from your daughter.”

“To save a house for a woman who thinks your daughter is worthless.”

“Because she doesn't carry your precious last name.”

Michael reached out for me.

“We can put the money back! I promise!”

“I’ll work double shifts. I’ll get a second job.”

“Don't do anything crazy, Evelyn.”

I stepped away from his touch like he was radioactive.

“I already did, Michael.”

“I turned off the tap.”

“You and your mother are completely on your own.”
