Chapter 5 - The Family Dinner Trap

Friday night arrived.

The dining room table was set with my finest china.

The irony was not lost on me.

They were eating off plates they had secretly tried to pawn.

Sarah arrived first, wearing a diamond necklace she definitely couldn't afford.

She looked uncomfortable, shifting her weight.

“Evelyn,” she forced a tight smile.

“Hello, Sarah. Please, sit.”

Mark and his wife, Clara, arrived next.

They brought Tyler, the 'golden heir'.

Olivia was safely upstairs with her nanny.

I wasn't going to let my daughter near this toxicity.

We sat down to dinner.

The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife.

Michael kept shooting nervous glances at me.

I poured the wine.

“So,” I began, clinking my glass against the bottle.

“I’m glad we could all be here tonight.”

“To discuss the future of this family.”

Sarah cleared her throat.

“Michael mentioned you were upset about... a misunderstanding.”

“I apologize if my words about Olivia were misconstrued.”

“I just meant Tyler is older. He has different needs.”

I smiled brightly.

“Different needs.”

“Like a $250,000 business loan for his father?”

The room went dead silent.

Mark dropped his fork. It clattered loudly against the china.

“Excuse me?” Mark stammered.

I pulled a thick manila folder from the empty chair next to me.

I tossed it onto the center of the table.

It slid perfectly, stopping right in front of the roast beef.

“That’s the forensic audit of my finances.”

“Authorized by my legal team.”

“It details the $120,000 Michael stole for Sarah.”

“The $400,000 mortgage on my Aspen home.”

“And the $250,000 fraudulent loan co-signed with my forged signature.”

Sarah gasped, clutching her pearls.

Clara turned to Mark, her face pale.

“Mark? What is she talking about?”

“You told me the business loan was from an angel investor!”

I laughed out loud.

“An angel investor? That’s cute.”

“No, Clara. The investor was me. Unwillingly.”

Michael stood up, his face red.

“Evelyn! You promised!”

“You said we were going to fix this privately!”

“I lied, Michael,” I said calmly.

“Just like you lied every time you looked our daughter in the eyes.”

May you like

“I didn't invite you here to fix things.”

“I invited you here to inform you that the police are on their way.”
