Chapter 5 - The Trap is Set

I drove straight to the precinct instead of the hospital. I bypassed the front desk and demanded to speak to a detective regarding a massive corporate theft and attempted manslaughter. That got their attention.
Within ten minutes, I was sitting in a fluorescent-lit interrogation room with Detective Ramirez, a sharp-eyed woman who listened to my story in stony silence. I handed over the ledger and the USB drive. When I explained that Daniel was selling a life-saving pediatric drug as an anti-aging treatment, her jaw practically hit the floor.
"This is incredibly damning, Mrs. Carter," Detective Ramirez said, flipping through the handwritten ledger. "But your husband is right about one thing—he has connections. If we just go arrest him at his house, his lawyers will claim the ledger is forged and the USB was planted by a vengeful wife. We need to catch him in the act. We need to find the stolen medication."
"He hasn't delivered it to Vanessa yet," I said, suddenly realizing the timeline. "He called me from his office to confess he 'canceled' it. He went home to check his safe, but he didn't take a bag into the house. The medication requires strict refrigeration. It has to be at the hospital, or at Vanessa's clinic."
Ramirez picked up her desk phone. "I'm getting a warrant for both locations. But we need a catalyst. We need him to panic and move the drugs."
That’s when Dr. Bennett called my cell. I put it on speaker for the detective.
"Emily, the hospital board just initiated an emergency audit," Dr. Bennett said, his voice urgent. "Daniel’s boss got wind of the missing Zynomab-C. Daniel is in the building. He's trying to access the cold storage wing right now."
Detective Ramirez stood up immediately, her hand resting on her duty belt. "He's trying to move the stolen batch before the auditors find it. Let's go, Mrs. Carter. We're going to catch your husband red-handed."
I rode in the passenger seat of an unmarked police cruiser, sirens blaring silently in my mind as we tore through the city streets. The pieces were falling into place. Daniel thought he was untouchable, but he was just a desperate rat trapped in a maze he built himself.
We arrived at St. Matthew's Hospital via the loading dock. A team of plainclothes officers met us at the service elevator. Dr. Bennett was waiting for us on the basement level, looking breathless.

"He's in the auxiliary pharmacy," Dr. Bennett whispered. "Vanessa is with him. They brought a thermal cooler."
"Perfect," Detective Ramirez said, drawing her weapon and nodding to her team. "Let's introduce ourselves."
