Chapter 7 - The Fight for Lily

The rush back to the ICU was a blur of hope and terror. Dr. Bennett didn't waste a single second. While the police were hauling Daniel and Vanessa to the precinct, the hospital administration, now fully aware of the scandal, expedited every protocol to get Lily her treatment.
I stood by her bedside, holding her frail hand, as the nurses hooked the IV bag containing the Zynomab-C to her line.
"It's going to take a few hours to see a change," Dr. Bennett explained gently, monitoring her vitals closely. "Her body has been through a massive trauma. But she's young, and she's a fighter."
I didn't leave her side for the next twenty-four hours. The hospital board sent their top executives down to apologize profusely, assuring me that Daniel had been terminated immediately and that Lily's medical bills for the rest of her life would be covered by the hospital network's insurance as part of a settlement to avoid a massive lawsuit. I barely heard them. All my focus was on the gentle rise and fall of my little girl's chest.
Around 3:00 AM on the second night, I was dozing in the uncomfortable plastic chair when I felt a tiny twitch in my hand.
My eyes flew open. Lily's fingers were curling around mine.
I stood up, holding my breath. Her eyelashes fluttered, and slowly, her big brown eyes opened, blinking against the dim light of the ICU monitors.
"Mommy?" she croaked, her voice weak and raspy.
Tears of absolute joy poured down my face. I leaned over and kissed her forehead, careful not to disturb her tubes. "I'm right here, baby. Mommy's right here. You're going to be okay."
"Where's Daddy?" she asked softly.
My heart ached, not for him, but for the loss of the father she thought she had. I smoothed her hair back. "Daddy had to go away, sweetie. But you have me. And you are going to get so strong now."

Over the next week, Lily's recovery was nothing short of miraculous. The medication did exactly what it was supposed to do, suppressing her runaway immune system and allowing her organs to heal. The color returned to her cheeks. Her laughter, a sound I feared I would never hear again, returned to the sterile hospital room, bringing light to the darkest days of our lives. Dr. Bennett visited every single day, his bond with Lily growing stronger with every joke he told her and every checkup he performed.
Meanwhile, the local news had exploded. The story of the wealthy hospital executive who stole pediatric drugs for a black-market beauty clinic was front-page news. Daniel's reputation was obliterated overnight.
