Chapter 4 - The Gathering Storm

The week of the wedding, the penthouse was a whirlwind of frantic energy.

Betsy had flown into town, taking over the living room with her loud voice and constant demands.

She took every opportunity to remind me of my failures.

"Alyssa's dress is Vera Wang," Betsy announced loudly to a friend on the phone, making sure I could hear from the hallway. "Of course, Connor can afford the best now. Not like his first wedding. That was just a courthouse disaster."

I ignored her, focusing on packing my things.

Not into cheap cardboard boxes, but into the expensive leather luggage I had bought years ago.

Connor caught me in the hallway as he was rushing out to an "emergency board meeting." He looked terrible. There were dark circles under his eyes, and his usually perfectly styled hair was messy.

"You're finally packing," he said, stopping to glare at me. "Good. I want you out by Saturday morning. Before the ceremony."

"I'll be out," I said calmly.

He scoffed, adjusting his tie. "You know, if you hadn't been so cold, maybe things would have been different. But you lacked ambition, Clara. You never understood what it takes to operate at my level."

"You're right, Connor," I replied, holding Brinley tight against my chest. "I don't understand your level at all."

Because my level was so far above his, he couldn't even see the sky.

Friday night, the eve of the wedding, Vanguard Holdings quietly missed its quarterly payroll.

Connor didn't know yet. The automated banking system wouldn't alert him until Monday morning, but my financial team had been monitoring the accounts. The cash flow had completely dried up.

Saturday morning arrived with bright, mocking sunshine.

I packed the last of Brinley's things into my car. The apartment was completely silent. Connor, Alyssa, and Betsy had left hours ago for hair, makeup, and pre-wedding photos at the country club.

I stood in the center of the empty living room one last time.

This place held memories of a man I used to love. A man who used to stay up late eating cheap takeout with me, promising that one day, he would give me the world.

He didn't realize I had already owned the world. I just wanted to share it with him.

I locked the door and left the key on the kitchen counter.

I drove to a luxury hotel downtown, where a styling team hired by my family was waiting.

They spent two hours doing my hair and makeup. When I slipped into the crimson dress, the woman staring back at me in the mirror was no longer the tired, heartbroken mother from the hospital room.

She was Clara Vance. Heiress. Majority shareholder.

And the executioner of Connor's empire.

I picked up Brinley, who was dressed in a beautiful little white dress, and grabbed the thick, white envelope sealed with red wax off the table.

"Let's go, sweetheart," I whispered to my daughter. "It's time to attend a wedding."
