Chapter 6 - The Empire Falls

"This... this is a forgery," Connor stammered, his voice cracking. He looked up at me, his eyes wide with a sudden, suffocating panic. "This isn't real. Apex Capital is a venture firm out of New York—"

"Apex Capital is a shell company, Connor," I said smoothly, my voice echoing in the dead silence of the ballroom. "Owned and operated by the Vance Family Trust. My trust."

The murmurs in the crowd grew louder. The name 'Vance' carried weight in this city. Heavy weight.

"You didn't build Vanguard Holdings," I continued, taking a step closer so he could see the absolute zero in my eyes. "I bought it for you. I funded it. I secured your clients. I let you play CEO because I loved you."

"No..." he whispered, dropping the papers. They fluttered onto the white carpet.

"And yesterday," I said, "Apex Capital officially withdrew all funding. We pulled our intellectual property rights. We terminated the lease on your headquarters. As of 5:00 PM yesterday, Vanguard Holdings is bankrupt. You have nothing."

Betsy rushed forward, grabbing her son's arm. "Connor! What is she talking about? Tell her she's lying!"

Connor couldn't speak. He was hyperventilating, staring at the papers on the floor as if they were venomous snakes.

"Oh, and the penthouse?" I added, my tone almost conversational now. "The deed is in my name. The bank called in your mortgage this morning. You and Alyssa are officially homeless."

Alyssa had finally waddled her way down the aisle, her face red with tears and rage.

"You bitch!" she screamed, raising her hand as if to slap me.

Before she could even swing, two large security guards—hired by my legal team, not the country club—stepped out from the shadows and blocked her path.

"Careful, Alyssa," I warned her, shifting Brinley gently on my hip. "Stress isn't good for the baby. Especially now that you'll have to raise him on a fast-food salary."

I looked back at Connor. The man who had thrown divorce papers in my face while I held our newborn. The man who had called our daughter useless.

He fell to his knees right there on the altar. The groom who thought he had won everything was now a broken man, staring at the ruins of a fake empire.

"Clara... please," he choked out, looking up at me with tears in his eyes. "Please. I'm sorry. We can fix this. I'll leave her. I'll come back to you."

The collective gasp from the audience this time was directed at him. Alyssa let out a horrifying wail, sobbing into Betsy's arms.

I looked down at him, feeling absolutely nothing. No anger. No sadness. Just closure.

"I don't want you back, Connor," I said clearly. "I just wanted you to know exactly who you threw away."

I turned my back on him.

The crowd parted for me immediately, creating a wide path as I walked back down the aisle. No one tried to stop me. No one said a word.

I stepped out of the suffocating ballroom and into the bright afternoon sun.

Brinley cooed softly, reaching a tiny hand up to touch my chin.

I smiled, holding her close, feeling the warm breeze against my face. The heavy chains of the past six years were finally broken, shattered into pieces on a country club floor.

I walked to my waiting car, ready to build a real empire. And this time, my daughter and I would wear the crowns.
