Chapter 2 - The Second Report

The rain hammered against the windshield of my car in relentless sheets, blurring the streetlights into smeared streaks of yellow and red. I sat in the driver’s seat, the engine off, enveloped in the cold, damp silence of the underground parking garage. My heart, which had maintained a steady, controlled rhythm throughout the entire disastrous dinner, finally began to pound against my ribs. I reached into my leather handbag, my fingers trembling just slightly, and pulled out the thick white envelope that contained the second set of documents. I turned on the interior overhead light, breaking the seal on the envelope for what felt like the hundredth time since I had received it two days ago.

While the first report confirmed my undeniable biological link to the twins and Gavin's lack thereof, this second dossier contained the meticulous, devastating truth of exactly how this monstrous betrayal had been orchestrated. My private investigator, a former forensic accountant named Elias, had dug deep into the financial and medical records of Dr. Aris Evans, the prestigious fertility specialist who had handled our IVF cycles. The documents in my lap laid out a paper trail of staggering corruption. There were bank transfers from a shell corporation controlled by Gavin directly into an offshore account owned by Dr. Evans. The payments were categorized as "consulting fees," but the dates aligned perfectly with the weeks following the supposed "destruction" of my viable embryos.

But the most damning piece of paper was a copy of the clinic's internal intake forms, illegally procured but undeniably authentic. It showed Tessa’s signature next to Gavin’s. They had presented themselves to the clinic as a couple. However, because Gavin was completely sterile—a secret he had apparently known for years and kept hidden from me while forcing me to undergo agonizing and unnecessary treatments—they couldn't use his genetic material. The forms indicated the purchase of donor sperm. The donor’s profile was attached: blonde hair, blue eyes, tall, high IQ—traits carefully selected to mimic Gavin’s own physical appearance so the children would pass as his.

I traced the harsh black ink on the page. Gavin was not only a thief and an adulterer; he was a narcissist who had manipulated my sister into becoming a surrogate for children he biologically had no part in, just so he could secure his position within his own family and punish me for a barrenness that was actually his own. Tessa, my own flesh and blood, had willingly carried my children, knowing the devastation it would cause me, all for the promise of a lavish lifestyle and the status of being Gavin's new wife. The betrayal was so profound, so multi-layered, it transcended simple anger. It forged a cold, diamond-hard resolve within me.

I thought back to our childhood. Tessa had always coveted what was mine. My clothes, my friends, my grandmother’s affection, and eventually, the trust fund that I managed responsibly while she blew through hers in a matter of years. Gavin had always been her ultimate prize, the handsome, successful CEO she felt she deserved. They were a perfect match in their vanity and greed. But they had miscalculated entirely. They believed that because I was introverted, because I preferred the quiet sanctuary of my office and the comfort of literature to their flashy socialite parties, that I was weak. They mistook my grief over my supposed infertility for a broken spirit.

I picked up my phone and dialed a number I had memorized over the past three weeks. It rang twice before a sharp, awake voice answered. “Claire. I assume the dinner went exactly as we predicted?” It was Arthur Penhaligon, one of the most ruthless and feared corporate litigators in the state, and my late grandmother’s closest confidant.

“He served me the divorce papers, Arthur. And he paraded the twins in front of the entire family.” My voice didn't waver.

“Did you sign them?”

“Every page. Just as you instructed.”

I could hear Arthur chuckle, a dry, rasping sound. “Excellent. He has legally documented his intent to sever the marriage under the current terms of the prenuptial agreement, completely unaware that those terms are instantly voided by the morality and fraud clauses we built into the trust. What is your location?”

“I’m in the parking garage. I’m heading to the hotel now.”

“Good. Get some sleep, Claire. Tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM, the injunctions go out. We freeze his bank accounts, we lock down the corporate assets, and we file the emergency custody petition based on genetic fraud and embryo theft. Tomorrow, Gavin wakes up to find out he is not a CEO, he is not a homeowner, and most importantly, he is not a father.”

I hung up the phone, staring out into the dark, rain-soaked night. A profound sense of peace washed over me. I wasn't just going to ruin them. I was going to erase them from the empire I had built, and I was going to bring my babies home.
