Chapter 5 - The Medical Trail

The swift and brutal dismantling of Gavin’s financial empire was only the first phase of my reclamation. The money, the company, the house—those were just material things. The true center of this nightmare lay within the sterile, white walls of the Genesis Fertility Clinic, and the corrupt hands of Dr. Aris Evans. I spent the next two days working intimately with Elias and a team of medical malpractice lawyers, unspooling the thread of deceit that had allowed my unborn children to be treated as negotiable commodities.
Armed with federal subpoenas and court orders, investigators raided the clinic early Tuesday morning. They seized hard drives, physical patient files, and internal communication logs. Dr. Evans, a man who had built a reputation as a miracle worker for the city’s elite, sat in his plush office, sweating profusely as federal agents boxed up his life's work. When Arthur and I walked into the interrogation room at the precinct later that evening, the doctor looked a decade older. His arrogant, reassuring bedside manner had vanished, replaced by the twitching paranoia of a trapped rat.
“Dr. Evans,” Arthur began, dropping a heavy binder onto the metal table. “We have banking records showing exactly two point five million dollars transferred from a Cayman Islands account—traced back to Gavin Sterling—into an account under your wife's maiden name. The dates correspond with the week you informed my client that her final batch of embryos had suffered a catastrophic freezing failure and were destroyed.”
Evans swallowed hard, refusing to meet my eyes. “I don't know what you're talking about. The IVF process is delicate. Failures happen constantly.”
“Failures happen,” I said, my voice eerily calm, leaning across the table. “Resurrections do not. My 'destroyed' embryos are currently breathing, crying, and living in my grandmother's house, having been incubated by my sister. Did you really think you could play God with my biology and leave no footprints?”
The doctor’s lawyer interjected, but Evans raised a shaking hand to silence him. The reality of the evidence was crushing him. Elias had found the original lab logs. Evans had fabricated a digital report showing the embryo demise, while simultaneously transferring the vials to a hidden cryogenic tank under a pseudonym. When Tessa and Gavin arrived months later, Evans orchestrated the implantation, falsifying the donor sperm records to make it appear as if it was a standard procedure for a sterile couple.
“He threatened to ruin my practice,” Evans whispered, his voice cracking. “Gavin knew about... indiscretions in my past. A malpractice suit I had buried. He said if I didn't give him your embryos, he would expose me to the medical board. He was obsessed with having heirs to solidify his control over your company, but he was furious when he found out he was shooting blanks. He blamed you, Claire. He hated that he was the broken one.”
“So you broke me instead to save yourself,” I concluded, feeling a wave of nausea at the sheer banality of his evil. “You sold my children to a man who despised me and a sister who envied me.”
“I thought... I thought they would be loved. They are healthy,” he pleaded, grasping at straws.

“You are going to lose your medical license, Dr. Evans,” Arthur stated, standing up and closing the binder. “And you are going to spend a significant portion of your remaining years in a federal penitentiary. The only way you reduce that sentence is if you testify exactly to what you just told us, in open court, during the custody hearing tomorrow.”
Evans nodded frantically, tears spilling down his cheeks. As we walked out of the precinct into the cool night air, I felt a heavy burden lift from my shoulders. The medical trail was completely exposed. Gavin could no longer hide behind the lie that this was some tragic mix-up. It was a calculated, vicious theft. The path was cleared for the most important fight of my life. Tomorrow, I would finally look a judge in the eye and demand the return of my flesh and blood.
