Chapter 3 - Collapsing Empires

The arrest made front-page news.

‘PROMINENT DEVELOPER AND MOTHER CHARGED IN HORRIFIC ASSAULT AND BRIBERY SCANDAL.’

The headlines were everywhere.

Lorraine was arrested at her country club.

Witnesses said she was dragged out in handcuffs, still holding a mimosa, screaming that she knew the mayor.

She didn't know that the mayor was already distancing himself from her family.

My recovery was a grueling marathon.

I was discharged from the hospital after three weeks, moving into a secure apartment arranged by Mr. Hale.

I had a private nurse and daily physical therapy.

My reflection in the mirror was hard to look at.

The burn scars crawled up my shoulder and spread across the right side of my neck.

They were angry, pink, and textured.

At first, I cried.

I grieved the skin I had lost.

But a young, empathetic burn specialist named Dr. Julian Reed helped change my perspective.

“Scars aren't a sign of weakness, Elena,” Julian told me one afternoon as he checked my grafts.

His touch was gentle, his eyes kind but serious.

“They are proof that you survived a fire. They are proof that you won.”

I held onto his words.

I needed them, because the war was far from over.

Adrian and Lorraine made bail.

They hired the most expensive defense attorney in the city, a man named Richard Vance—Adrian's uncle.

They immediately launched a smear campaign against me.

They leaked fake stories to tabloid blogs, claiming I was mentally unstable.

They said I had burned myself in a hysterical fit to frame them because Adrian wanted a divorce.

Society can be cruel.

Some people believed them.

Online comments called me a gold-digger, a psycho, a monster.

Adrian was playing the victim card perfectly.

But I didn't respond to the media.

I let them talk.

I let them dig their graves deeper.

Behind the scenes, Detective Miller's investigation was ripping Adrian's business apart.

The D.A. subpoenaed the city inspectors mentioned on my recording.

Faced with federal prison, two of the inspectors flipped.

They provided bank records showing offshore transfers from Lorraine’s accounts.

They provided emails from Adrian directing the use of substandard steel in his new high-rise.

The city immediately halted construction on all of Adrian's projects.

His investors panicked.

Lawsuits began piling up like autumn leaves.

In less than a month, Adrian's multi-million dollar empire was crumbling into dust.

And they knew exactly who had pushed the first domino.

Late one night, my phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

I answered it.

“You’re going to pay for this, Elena,” Lorraine’s venomous voice hissed through the speaker.

“I will take everything you have.”

I didn't hang up.

May you like

I just smiled into the darkness.

“You already took my skin, Lorraine,” I whispered. “But I’m taking your freedom. See you in court.”
