Chapter 6 - The Betrayal

My outburst on the stand changed the trajectory of the trial.
The defense objected furiously, but the door had been opened.
The D.A. immediately called the flipped city inspectors to the stand.
Inspector Higgins testified under oath that Adrian had paid him $100,000 to ignore failing structural integrity tests on his flagship building.
He testified that Lorraine Vance had personally handed him the cash in a brown paper bag.
The financial crimes were now inextricably linked to the assault.
Adrian and Lorraine hadn't just burned a disobedient wife; they had tried to silence a witness to a massive fraud.
As the evidence of corruption piled up, the defense strategy collapsed.
Adrian realized he was facing decades in federal prison.
Panic set in.
He knew there was only one way to reduce his sentence.
He had to turn on his mother.
On the final day of testimony, Adrian shocked the courtroom by demanding to take the stand.
Against his uncle’s furious advice, Adrian sat in the witness box.
He looked disheveled.
“Adrian, did you pour the oil on your wife?” his new public defender asked.
“No,” Adrian said, crying fake tears.
“My mother did it. Lorraine did it. She acted alone.”
A collective gasp swept through the gallery.
Lorraine leaped out of her chair.
“You traitor!” she screamed at her own son. “I did it for you! Everything I did was for you!”
Bailiffs rushed forward, forcing Lorraine back into her seat.
Adrian kept crying.
“I was terrified of her,” he lied to the jury.
“She controlled the finances. She bribed the inspectors. When she attacked Elena, I was paralyzed with shock. I didn't know what to do.”
“You laughed on the recording!” the D.A. yelled during cross-examination.
“It was nervous laughter!” Adrian pleaded. “I was in shock!”
It was a pathetic, disgusting display.
He was a coward to his core, willing to throw his own mother to the wolves to save his own skin.
But it didn't work.
The D.A. played the recording one more time.
She pointed out that Adrian had told the hospital staff I had spilled the oil.
She pointed out his demands for my property transfer while I was bleeding.
He was not a shocked bystander; he was an active conspirator.
When the prosecution rested, Lorraine had to be sedated.
Adrian sat alone at the defense table, his head in his hands.
The arrogant sneer was gone.
The illusion of power was shattered.

They had turned on each other, just as rats do when a ship is sinking.
And I sat in the gallery, watching the flames of justice burn their empire to the ground.
