Chapter 2 - The Midnight Protocol

The heavy doors of the lead sedan opened before the vehicle had completely come to a halt.

Out stepped Marcus, my chief legal counsel, dressed in his immaculate charcoal suit. Behind him, men and women in dark windbreakers bearing the letters FBI fanned out across the manicured lawn.

The string quartet dropped their instruments.

A collective gasp rippled through the three hundred high-society guests.

Marcus walked past the frozen waiters, past the towering champagne fountain, and stopped directly in front of the bandstand where I stood.

He didn't look at Ethan. He didn't look at Olivia.

He bowed his head slightly to me.

“It’s done, Ms. Devereux. The offshore accounts are frozen, and the warrants have been executed at the Sterling corporate headquarters.”

Ethan stumbled backward, bumping into a table and sending a silver tray crashing to the ground.

“Ms... Ms. Devereux?” Ethan stammered, his eyes darting wildly between Marcus and me. “Her last name is Smith. Clara Smith.”

I reached up and pulled the diamond tiara—a 'gift' from Olivia that she never let me forget—from my hair. I tossed it onto the wet tiles.

“Clara Devereux,” I corrected him, my voice steady. “CEO and majority shareholder of Devereux Holdings. The same holding company that quietly bailed out your failing real estate empire six months ago.”

Olivia’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water.

“No,” she whispered. “No, the anonymous investor... the silent partner... that’s an elderly gentleman from Europe. Not... not you.”

“I let you believe what you wanted to believe,” I said coldly. “Just like I let you believe my parents were nothing. My father repairs classic cars for billionaires, Olivia. And my mother’s 'thrift store' clothes are vintage pieces she collects because she actually cares about history, not price tags.”

I stepped off the bandstand and walked toward my parents.

The crowd parted for me like the Red Sea. No one dared to breathe.

“Ma’am,” one of the federal agents said, approaching Olivia. “Olivia Sterling? We have a warrant for your arrest regarding wire fraud, embezzlement, and the misappropriation of charity funds.”

Olivia screamed. It wasn’t a dignified, high-society gasp. It was a raw, guttural screech of pure panic.

She lunged toward Ethan, grabbing his tuxedo jacket. “Do something! Call our lawyers! Call Richard!”

“Richard works for me now,” Marcus noted mildly, checking his watch. “He resigned from your firm ten minutes ago when the federal indictment was unsealed.”

Ethan looked at me, his eyes filling with a pathetic mix of fear and sudden, calculated realization.

“Clara, baby,” he pleaded, holding out his hands. “We can talk about this. We’re supposed to get married. I love you.”

I looked at the man I had almost tied my life to.

“You stood there and watched my parents drown in your mother’s arrogance,” I said softly. “You never loved me, Ethan. You loved the idea of a quiet, compliant girl who wouldn't overshadow you.”

I wrapped my arm around my mother’s shoulders.

“We’re leaving,” I told Marcus.

May you like

“Your car is waiting at the side entrance, Clara,” Marcus replied.

As we walked away, the sound of handcuffs clicking around Olivia Sterling’s wrists echoed beautifully into the night.
