Chapter 4 - Unveiling the Truth

By 11:30 AM, the lobby of the Sterling corporate tower was a madhouse.

Reporters were packed against the glass doors. Paparazzi flashes went off like strobe lights. Security guards were sweating as they tried to maintain order.

My black SUV pulled up to the underground VIP entrance, bypassing the chaos entirely.

As I stepped out, dressed in a sharp, tailored white power suit that cost more than Ethan’s car, I felt like I was finally breathing my own air again.

Marcus was waiting by the private elevator.

“Olivia posted bail an hour ago,” he informed me, handing me a sleek tablet with the latest financial briefings. “She put up her summer estate in the Hamptons. The one she doesn't know you hold the secondary mortgage on.”

“Let her think she has a lifeline,” I replied, swiping through the data. “It will make cutting it that much more satisfying.”

How did a twenty-six-year-old girl come to own the Sterling family?

It wasn't magic. It was math.

Four years ago, my grandfather left me the keys to Devereux Holdings, a private equity firm that specialized in distressed assets. I had a mind for numbers and a ruthlessness in the boardroom that made the old men in the industry shake their heads in disbelief.

But it was lonely.

I wanted a normal life. I wanted to go to coffee shops without a bodyguard. I wanted to date a man who didn't immediately google my net worth.

So, I created 'Clara Smith.' A freelance designer. I met Ethan at a charity gala I was secretly funding. He thought I was the hired help organizing the brochures. He was charming, handsome, and seemingly down-to-earth.

I fell for the illusion.

But as the wedding approached, the mask slipped. His family’s financial troubles started leaking into the press. Instead of cutting back on their lavish lifestyle, Olivia doubled down, throwing parties, buying yachts, and looking for a scapegoat.

I became that scapegoat. The 'poor girl' dragging their son down.

Behind the scenes, I had Marcus buy up their debt, hoping to save them. Hoping to present the cleared ledgers to Ethan as a wedding gift.

Instead, it became my weapon.

The elevator pinged, opening onto the top floor. The executive boardroom.

Through the glass walls, I could see Ethan pacing back and forth, his tie undone, his hair disheveled. Olivia sat at the head of the table, looking pale and aged without her usual team of makeup artists.

I pushed the glass doors open.

They both snapped their heads toward me.

“What are you doing here?” Olivia spat, standing up. Her hands were shaking. “Security! Get this... this fraud out of my building!”

I ignored her, walking calmly to the other end of the long mahogany table.

“You don't own this building anymore, Olivia,” I said, setting my tablet down. “And as of ten minutes ago, you don't employ security.”

Ethan rushed forward, stopping just short of me.

“Clara, please,” he begged. “My mother is sick. She’s stressed. You made your point. You embarrassed us. Now tell your people to back off and release our accounts!”

I looked at him, truly looked at him, and felt nothing but profound pity.

“Sit down, Ethan,” I commanded.

He hesitated, then slowly sank into a chair.

“We aren't here to negotiate,” I said, leaning forward. “We are here for the eviction.”
