Chapter 2 - The Echoes of Betrayal

Olivia pressed the button on the hidden recorder.
She didn't pull it out from under the pillow.
She just let the audio play at maximum volume.
A sudden stream of static hissed through the quiet bedroom.
Then, Diane’s voice echoed from the small speaker.
“If she keeps complaining about the dizziness, just give her the blue pills again.”
Ethan’s recorded voice answered.
“The doctor said the blue ones could induce early labor if her blood pressure spikes.”
Diane’s response sent a chill down Margaret’s spine.
“Exactly, Ethan. If she doesn't survive the complications, the trust defaults to the spouse. We’ve already submitted the modified insurance forms. We just need time.”
The recording clicked off.
Olivia pulled the device from under the pillow and held it up.
Her hand was no longer trembling.
Her eyes, bruised and exhausted, burned with a fierce, protective fire.
She looked at her husband.
She looked at the man who had promised to love and protect her.
"I heard everything," Olivia said, her voice steady.
"Every whisper. Every plan."
Ethan stared at the device, paralyzed by disbelief.
His perfect crime.
His flawless manipulation.
Unraveled by an old, discarded cell phone.
"Give me that," Ethan snarled, lunging toward the bed.
He didn't make it.
Margaret moved with lightning speed.
She intercepted him, driving the heel of her hand hard into his chest.
The strike knocked the wind out of him, sending him stumbling backward into his mother.
Diane shrieked as they both crashed against the dresser.
"Don't you ever," Margaret hissed, her voice low and lethal, "take another step toward my child."
Ethan gasped for air, his face turning crimson with rage.
"She's my wife!" he roared, abandoning all pretense.
"This is my house! You can't just walk in here and ruin my life!"
"You ruined your own life, Major," Margaret said, dialing three numbers on her phone.
She put it on speaker.
“911, what is your emergency?” the dispatcher’s voice rang out.
"This is Investigator Margaret Carter, DoD Inspector General's Office," she stated clearly.
"I need immediate police presence and an ambulance at the Carter Estate in Concord."
"I have an active-duty military officer attempting assault, and a pregnant woman who has been systematically drugged and abused."
Diane began to weep hysterically.
"Ethan, do something! They're going to arrest us!"
Ethan looked wildly around the room.
The windows were locked.
The hallway was narrow.
His career, his freedom, the millions of dollars he had tried to steal...
All of it was slipping through his fingers.
He looked at Olivia, his eyes filled with pure malice.
"You're going to regret this, Olivia. No one crosses me."
"I just did," she replied, resting a protective hand over her stomach.
Margaret didn't wait for Ethan to recover.
She grabbed the heavy wooden chair from the vanity.
She dragged it to the center of the room, creating a physical barrier between the bed and the door.
"The police are three minutes away," Margaret warned.
"I suggest you use that time to call a very good lawyer."
But Ethan wasn't thinking about lawyers.
He was thinking about survival.
He knew what the military justice system did to officers who committed premeditated fraud and abuse.
He turned and bolted out of the bedroom, sprinting down the grand staircase.
Diane chased after him, her expensive heels clicking frantically against the hardwood.
"Ethan! Wait for me!"
Margaret didn't chase them.
She immediately turned her attention back to her daughter.
"Are you hurt anywhere else?" she asked, her clinical, military tone softening into that of a worried mother.
Olivia shook her head, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes.
"Mom... I was so scared."
Margaret pulled her into a tight, careful embrace.

"I know, baby. I know. But he's never going to touch you again."
"I promise you that."
