Chapter 5 - The Weight of Justice

The sterile smell of the hospital room was a welcome comfort to Olivia.

She lay back against the crisp white pillows, an IV dripping fluids into her arm.

The fetal monitor strapped to her belly beeped with a strong, steady rhythm.

The baby's heartbeat.

Fast. Healthy. Alive.

The doctors had managed to stabilize her blood pressure and halt the early contractions.

She was safe, but they mandated strict bed rest for the remainder of her pregnancy.

Margaret sat in a chair beside the bed, peeling an apple with military precision.

"They denied his bail," Margaret said without looking up.

Olivia let out a long breath. "And Diane?"

"Denied as well," Margaret replied, handing a slice of apple to her daughter.

"The audio recording was the nail in the coffin."

"Conspiracy to commit murder, wire fraud, aggravated domestic assault."

"The local DA is throwing the book at them."

Margaret paused, a grim smile touching her lips.

"And that's just the civilian side."

"The Army CID has taken over the fraud investigation."

"Ethan is facing a general court-martial."

"Conduct unbecoming an officer, fraud, and bringing disgrace upon the uniform."

"He will spend decades in Fort Leavenworth."

Olivia closed her eyes.

Tears leaked out, but this time, they were tears of immense relief.

The monster was locked away.

He couldn't hurt her anymore.

He couldn't hurt their child.

Over the next few weeks, the legal system ground Ethan and Diane down to dust.

Faced with the overwhelming evidence, Diane broke first.

She accepted a plea deal, agreeing to testify against her own son to avoid a life sentence.

She confessed to swapping Olivia's prenatal vitamins with blood pressure stimulants.

She confessed to helping Ethan forge the trust documents.

When Ethan heard of his mother's betrayal, he fired his expensive lawyer and tried to represent himself.

It was a disaster.

His arrogance, the very trait that had fueled his abuse, became his undoing in the courtroom.

He shouted at the judge.

He tried to gaslight the jury.

But the jury heard the tape.

They saw the photographs of Olivia's bruised ribs.

It took them less than two hours to find him guilty on all counts.

When the judge handed down a forty-year sentence without the possibility of early parole, Ethan Brooks finally broke.

He wept openly as the bailiffs dragged him away.

He was stripped of his rank.

Stripped of his dignity.

And completely erased from Olivia's life.

With the criminal trial concluded, the family trust lawyers swiftly annulled the marriage.

Everything Ethan had stolen was recovered and returned to the estate.

The dark cloud that had hung over Olivia for so long finally dissipated.

She was free to heal.

Free to prepare for the true owner of her heart to arrive.
