Chapter 4 - The Trap is Set

Sunday was a day of meticulous planning. Jonathan’s estate hummed with quiet efficiency. His security director, a former Navy SEAL named Vance, briefed me on the layout of the bank. Pointing to a digital blueprint on a tablet, Vance explained that my father had rented the VIP conference room at the First Carolina Depository for 10:00 A.M. The notary present would be Phillip Vance, a dirty lawyer my father had used in the past who would stamp anything for a fee. I sipped the hot tea the nurse had brought me, the pain in my ribs manageable now, though the ache in my heart remained sharp.
I watched Jonathan pace the room. Despite the massive wealth and power he wielded, he was intimately involved in every detail of this plan. When Vance left, I asked Jonathan why he was doing all this when he could have simply frozen the assets. Jonathan stopped pacing and looked at an abstract portrait hanging above the fireplace. “Eleanor saved my life. Not just my career. My life,” he said quietly. He explained that before he met her, his fiancée had passed away from cancer, leaving him with crushing medical debt. Eleanor gave him purpose and a responsibility to build things that would last.
He walked over and looked down at Noah in his crib. “I promised her I would protect her legacy. You and Noah are that legacy. I will not let Richard Bennett destroy it.” A strange sense of peace washed over me. For the first time in my life, I felt truly protected—not by blood, but by loyalty. When I voiced my concern about my father's security and inevitable screaming threats, Jonathan simply assured me that he had more security and to let my father try. I looked down at my cast and noted that I would need a very nice outfit to hide my hospital gown. Jonathan gave a genuine smile and promised a tailor within the hour.
