Chapter 6 - The Confession

Silence suffocated the room. The bank manager looked bewildered, while the corrupt notary immediately started packing his briefcase until Jonathan commanded him to sit back down. My father recovered his composure, though his hands were shaking violently. He forced a smile, claiming the police had called about a crash and they thought I was dead. I cut him off, asking if he thought Darren Cole had finished the job. My mother flinched as my father stammered, pretending not to know who Darren Cole was.

Jonathan pulled a small remote from his pocket and clicked it. The large presentation screen on the wall hummed to life, displaying a video feed of a holding room at the police precinct. Darren Cole sat across from Detective Shaw, and his voice echoed clearly through the bank's speakers. Cole confessed that Richard Bennett had paid him fifty thousand dollars in cash to run me off the road and make it look like an accident, specifically mentioning the need to claim a trust fund before Monday.

My father collapsed back into his chair as the reality of his exposure set in. Whitney started crying a high-pitched, selfish wail, complaining that this was going to ruin her wedding. I looked at my sister in disgust; even now, facing attempted murder, she only cared about her social standing. I turned to my parents, my voice laced with fury. “You sold your own daughter. You tried to murder the mother of your grandson. For what? To keep up appearances?” My mother sobbed about debt and losing the house, but I felt no pity. I officially canceled the transfer just as Detective Shaw walked into the room with four uniformed officers, placing my parents under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, fraud, and forgery.
