Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

I drove to my parents’ house, the ache in my knee silenced by the adrenaline coursing through my veins. The mansion stood like a mausoleum of their excess. When I walked in, unannounced, the atmosphere shifted instantly. My father looked up from his desk, his face twisting into a mask of pure indignation.

"Emily? How did you get here? And why are you limping like that?"

"We need to talk about money, Dad," I said, leaning on my crutches. "Specifically, the money you stole from the trust."

My mother entered the room, a glass of wine in her hand. "What on earth are you blathering about?"

I turned to Madison, who was hovering in the doorway, looking pale and erratic. "Madison, tell them what you found when you tried to register the yacht. Tell them about the documents you signed."

Madison’s eyes filled with terror. "I... I didn't know. He said it was for taxes. He said if I signed, we’d be millionaires."

My father stood up, his face reddening. "Shut up, Madison! You signed them. You’re liable."

"I have the forensic reports," I cut in, my voice sharp as a blade. "I know about the trust. The one Grandpa left behind. The one my biological mother, Claire, left for me before she died. You didn't just neglect me; you systematically embezzled my inheritance to fund your 'golden child's' lifestyle."

The silence in the room was suffocating. My mother’s glass slipped from her fingers, shattering on the marble floor. The champagne spilled like blood.
