Chapter 7 - The Reconstruction

The surgery was a success, though the road to recovery was long. As I began physical therapy, I used the funds from the lawsuit and the lottery to rebuild what had been broken. I didn't buy a yacht. I bought a quiet house near the coast, a place where Jake could finally build his dream shop without the weight of the world on his shoulders.

The trial was a media circus. The story of the soldier, the sold tools, and the embezzled trust captured the public’s imagination. My parents were sentenced to years in federal prison for financial crimes that spanned over twenty years.

I sat in the courtroom on the final day, my leg finally healing, my gait regaining its strength. When the judge passed the sentence, I didn't look at my parents. I looked at the gallery, where Jake was sitting, his face finally peaceful.

We had survived. We had been forged in the fire of their neglect, and we had come out the other side harder, stronger, and finally, completely free. The money hadn't changed who I was; it had only provided the shield I needed to protect the people I actually loved.
