Chapter 3 - The Legal Threat

By Thursday, rumors had already started swirling.

In the dance mom community, secrets are currency.

Someone had seen my car parked outside the community center.

Someone else had noticed Lily wasn’t at the final dress rehearsal for the showcase.

My phone buzzed at 2:00 PM while Lily was stretching.

The caller ID flashed: Vanessa.

I let it go to voicemail.

Ten minutes later, I received an email with the subject line: URGENT - Hartline Dance Studio.

I opened it.

It wasn’t an apology.

It was a cease-and-desist warning.

Sarah, the email read. It has come to my attention that Lily plans to compete this weekend as an independent.

Let me remind you that any choreography learned at Hartline is the exclusive intellectual property of this studio.

If she uses even one sequence of our routine, I will have her disqualified and pursue legal action.

Do not make a fool of our family.

I read the email twice.

My blood boiled.

She wasn’t just kicking Lily out; she was actively trying to sabotage her backup plan.

She was terrified that Lily might actually succeed without her.

I typed a reply.

Vanessa. We wouldn’t dream of using your choreography. It lacked depth anyway. See you at Nationals.

I hit send before I could change my mind.

When I showed the email to Lily, she didn’t cry this time.

Something inside my daughter had shifted.

The fear of her aunt’s approval was gone.

In its place was a cold, quiet focus.

“Let’s run it from the top,” Lily said, walking back to the center of the scuffed floor.

She didn’t miss a single beat.

Her turns were sharper.

Her leaps were higher.

She was dancing with a vengeance.

Friday night, the eve of Vanessa’s grand showcase, we were still at the community center.

We stayed until the janitor kindly asked us to leave.

Lily was exhausted.

Her muscles ached, and she had a new blister on her heel.

But as we walked to the car under the glow of the streetlights, she looked up at me.

“Mom?”

“Yes, sweetie?”

“I’m not scared anymore.”

I squeezed her hand.

“I know. You’re ready.”

Vanessa thought she had broken my daughter.

She had no idea she had just forged her into steel.
