Chapter 8 - Taking The Stage

“Next on stage, entry 127. Lily Hart, Independent.”

The words echoed through the backstage area.

Lily opened her eyes and pulled out her earbuds.

She handed me her phone.

“Ready?” I asked.

“Ready.”

She walked toward the wings.

The stage manager gave her a thumbs-up.

Lily stepped out of the shadows and into the glaring stage lights.

The auditorium was massive.

Thousands of faces stared back at her from the darkness.

In the front row, the three judges sat with their pens poised over their score sheets.

Lily walked to the center of the stage.

She didn’t strike a flashy, aggressive pose like Madison.

She simply knelt on the floor, bowing her head.

Total silence fell over the room.

Then, the first note of the cello echoed through the speakers.

It was deep, mournful, and incredibly powerful.

Lily lifted her head.

The expression on her face made my breath catch in my throat.

It was pure, unadulterated vulnerability.

She began to move.

Every extension was filled with longing.

Every leap was a desperate reach for freedom.

She wasn't just performing choreography; she was bleeding on that stage.

I watched from the wings, tears pricking my eyes.

I remembered the nights she cried in her room.

I remembered Vanessa’s cruel voice echoing in the lobby.

“She’s stiff. She panics under pressure. She’ll ruin my reputation.”

Lily was taking every single one of those words and crushing them under her bare feet.

She hit the triple pirouette perfectly.

She flowed into the penché, holding it for a second longer than usual, showing impossible control.

The audience was completely captivated.

No one was whispering.

No one was checking their phones.

They were entirely focused on the girl in the burgundy dress.

As the music built to its climax, Lily launched into the grand jeté.

She soared.

It felt like she hung in the air forever, defying gravity, breaking free from everything that had held her down.

She landed silently, gracefully.

The music faded out, leaving only a haunting echo.

Lily collapsed back to the floor, exactly where she started.

Head bowed.

Done.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then, a single person in the back of the auditorium stood up and started clapping.

Then another.

Within seconds, the entire auditorium was on its feet.

It was a standing ovation.

The roar of the crowd was deafening.

I looked at the judges.

One of them was wiping a tear from her eye.

Lily stood up, chest heaving, and gave a deep, respectful bow.

She walked off the stage.

When she reached the wings, she collapsed into my arms, sobbing.

“You did it,” I cried into her hair. “You were incredible.”

Mark wrapped his arms around both of us, burying his face in Lily’s shoulder.

“I am so proud of you,” he choked out.

I looked over Mark’s shoulder.

Standing near the dressing room doors was Vanessa.

She was staring at the stage, her mouth slightly open.

May you like

She had seen the whole thing.

And for the first time in her life, Vanessa Hart had absolutely nothing to say.
