Chapter 6 - THE TRAP CLOSES IN

Before I could fully digest the staggering revelation about Lauren’s criminal double life, the front doorbell rang.

It wasn't a normal, polite chime.

It was a heavy, rhythmic, aggressive pounding that rattled our front door frame and set our dog barking frantically in the back room.

James’s body instantly shifted into tactical mode.

He motioned for me to stay back near the kitchen island, his hand sliding instinctively toward the concealed holster beneath his sweater.

“Stay here, Elena. Do not come out no matter what you hear,” he commanded in a whisper that brooked zero argument.

He moved silently across the hardwood floor, hugging the wall before peering through the narrow glass side panel of the front door.

I held my breath, clutching the kitchen counter so hard my knuckles turned white.

Through the heavy oak door, a familiar, panicked voice echoed into the foyer:

“James! Elena! Please, for God's sake, open the door! They're outside! They're everywhere!”

It was my mother.

Without waiting for James’s permission, I sprinted past him and wrenched the door open.

My mother stumbled inward, shivering violently, her designer coat torn, her face streaked with tears and freezing rain.

Behind her on the driveway, two unmarked black SUVs sat idling with their headlights off, blocking our suburban driveway completely.

“Mom! What happened? How did you get here?” I cried out, grabbing her ice-cold hands and pulling her inside out of the freezing wind.

“They took Lauren!” my mother sobbed hysterically, clutching my arms with a desperate grip. “Two men in tactical gear broke into our house an hour after sunrise! They threw a bag over her head and dragged her into a car! They said if James didn't hand over the ledger by noon today, Lauren would be killed, and our entire family would be wiped out!”

James stepped forward, slamming the front door shut and locking all three deadbolts with a sharp, metallic click.

His face was a mask of cold, calculated fury.

“The ledger,” James muttered darkly. “Cole isn't just hiding out in Connecticut. He’s trying to tie up every loose end before federal investigators close in on his network.”

“What ledger, James?” my mother shrieked, panic distorting her features. “What did you and that monster Cole get mixed up in? Save my daughter! Do whatever he wants!”

James looked down at my mother with a piercing, unwavering gaze that immediately silenced her hysterical screaming.

“I didn't get mixed up in it, Helen,” James said coldly, using her first name for the first time in our marriage. “I’m the one who built the case against him. And right now, your daughter traded her soul for gambling money, and it’s about to cost all of us everything.”
