Chapter 7 - THE SHOWDOWN AT BRIDGEPORT MOTEL

By 10:00 AM, we weren't waiting for the kidnappers' deadline anymore.

James had already transmitted his encrypted digital evidence package directly to federal authorities and his former commanding officer, bypassing the compromised chain of command entirely.

But federal backup was twenty minutes away, and Lauren’s life—however toxic, cruel, and selfish she had been—was ticking down by the second.

James pulled his truck up behind an abandoned, graffiti-scarred motel off the highway in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the exact coordinates pulled from Sergeant Marcus Cole’s cell phone ping.

“You stay in the truck, Elena. Lock all the doors,” James ordered, checking the magazine of his legal sidearm before sliding it into his waistband.

“I’m not staying behind, James,” I said firmly, popping the passenger door open before he could stop me. “Lauren slapped my baby, yes. She’s a nightmare. But she is my sister, and I am not letting you walk into a death trap alone.”

James looked at me for a long, silent moment, recognizing the stubborn, unyielding spark in my eyes that matched his own.

He nodded once. “Stay behind me. Exactly two steps.”

We crept through the frozen, litter-strewn gravel parking lot of the dilapidated motel toward Room 114.

A single heavy-duty padlock hung loosely on the outside door frame, and muffled shouts echoed faintly from within.

Without hesitation, James raised his boot and kicked the wooden door squarely beside the knob.

The door splintered inward with a deafening crash, flying open to reveal a scene straight out of an action thriller.

Sergeant Marcus Cole—a heavily tattooed, broad-shouldered ex-soldier with wild, paranoid eyes—was standing over Lauren, who was tied securely to a metal chair with heavy duct tape across her mouth, tears streaming down her pale face.

Cole spun around instantly, a heavy black pistol gripped tightly in his right hand, pointing it directly at James's chest.

“Well, well, well,” Cole sneered, a manic grin stretching across his scarred face. “The hero captain finally decided to show up. Drop the weapon, Walker, or the girl gets a bullet right between the eyes.”
