Chapter 8 - The Syndicate's Shadow

It wasn't quite over, but it ended that night.

Garrett left Elena and Margaret under the protection of twenty armed guards at a secondary safehouse outside the city limits. Then, he gathered the full, terrifying might of his organization.

Elena sat in the living room of the safehouse, staring at the fire, wiping the dried blood from her hands with a warm towel. Margaret sat beside her in silence, occasionally resting a comforting hand on Elena’s knee.

“He is ending them tonight,” Margaret said quietly. “All of them.”

“Madison too?” Elena asked, the memory of the emerald silk dress flashing in her mind.

“Madison crossed the line between business and blood,” Margaret replied, her voice holding the absolute zero temperature of her son’s eyes. “She sent men to kill me to break him. My son does not forgive such things. By morning, the Cole family will only exist in history books.”

Elena shivered. She had always known what Garrett was, but the reality of it was heavy, suffocating. She had killed a man today. She had stepped completely into the dark world she used to only observe from the edges.

True to Margaret’s word, at 4:00 AM, Garrett returned.

He looked exhausted. His knuckles were bruised, and there was a dark smear of soot on his jaw. He walked into the living room, dismissed the guards with a wave of his hand, and sat heavily in the armchair opposite them.

“It’s done,” Garrett said flatly. “The Cole syndicate is dismantled. The leadership is gone. The remaining lieutenants have sworn loyalty to us.”

“And Madison?” Margaret asked.

Garrett looked at the fire. “She is on a private plane to Europe. She has a new passport, a modest bank account, and the understanding that if she ever contacts anyone in this hemisphere again, the plane will be the last thing she ever flies in.”

Elena looked at him in surprise. “You didn't kill her.”

Garrett met Elena’s eyes. “You asked me once to promise not to let her touch my mother again. I kept that promise. I didn't need to kill her to make her a ghost. Death is easy. Irrelevance is what terrifies a woman like Madison.”

He rubbed his face, letting out a long, ragged exhale. The invincible mafia boss looked entirely human, broken down by the weight of a crown he never took off.

Margaret stood up slowly, her cane tapping softly on the rug. “I am going to bed. You two need to talk.”

She left the room, the heavy oak doors closing behind her, leaving Elena and Garrett alone in the quiet crackle of the firelight.
