Chapter 9 - Confessions in the Dark

For a long time, neither of them spoke.

Elena watched the flames dance in Garrett’s blue eyes. The silence between them wasn't the oppressive silence of the restaurant; it was the fragile, terrifying silence of a bomb waiting to be defused.

Garrett leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “You killed a man today to save my mother.”

“He was going to shoot her,” Elena said, her voice barely a whisper. “I didn't think. I just reacted.”

“You shouldn't have had to,” Garrett said bitterly. “You were a waitress, Elena. You were supposed to be safe. I dragged you into this life, into this violence, because I was selfish. Because I wanted you near me.”

Elena stood up. She walked over to his chair and, surprisingly herself, knelt on the floor in front of him, forcing him to look down at her.

“You didn't drag me anywhere,” Elena said firmly. “I stepped into the middle of your dining room and shoved your fiancée against a wall. I made a choice. I chose to see what was happening, and I chose to intervene.”

Garrett reached out, his bruised fingers gently tracing the line of her cheek, just as he had in the library. “Why? Why risk your life for us?”

“Because you were blind, and someone had to be your eyes,” she said softly. She leaned into his touch. “And because of the rainy Tuesday.”

Garrett frowned, confused. “The rainy Tuesday?”

“Two years ago. You told me I had a good memory,” Elena smiled sadly. “You looked at me. Not through me. For a man who never looks at anything he doesn't own, you looked at me like I mattered. I never forgot it.”

Garrett’s breath hitched. He slipped his hands into her hair, holding her face like it was the most precious thing left in his broken world.

“You matter,” he whispered fiercely. “You are the only real thing in a life built on lies and blood. When I saw you on that floor today, covered in blood... I realized I don't care about the territory, or the syndicates, or the money. If I lost you, there would be nothing left of me but the monster.”

“Then don't lose me,” Elena said, her voice steady and clear.

Garrett didn't hesitate anymore. He leaned down and kissed her.

It wasn't a gentle kiss. It was desperate, bruised, and tasting of smoke and survival. It was a confession poured into the dark, a silent vow between two people who had spent their lives watching the world from the outside, finally finding a place to belong.

Elena wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer, anchoring the most dangerous man in Chicago to the ground.
