Chapter 5 - The Blue Ribbon

At 2:00 PM Central Time, a new link dropped on Emily’s previously dormant Instagram account.
No caption. Just a link.
Within five minutes, a hundred thousand people were waiting.
When the camera clicked on, Emily wasn't wearing a glamorous gown or crying into a tissue.
She was sitting on a simple beige sofa, looking directly into the lens. Her face was bare, pale, and entirely resolute.
“Grant Maddox claims I am delusional,” Emily began, her voice steady. “He claims I forged the documents you saw last night.”
She held up a thick manila folder.
“These are printed copies of the internal financial ledgers for the Maddox Foundation from the last three years. The foundation that claims to support maternal health in low-income communities.”
She opened the folder and held up a page.
“I didn't forge these. Grant’s Chief Financial Officer, David Hess, signed off on every single one. Because David Hess didn't know Grant was siphoning thirty percent of the charity’s incoming donations into a private offshore account.”
The live chat scrolling on the side of the screen moved so fast it was a blur of colors.
“Sienna Vale isn't just his mistress,” Emily continued. “Her wellness company is a shell corporation used to wash the stolen charity funds. The $250,000 transfer I showed last night wasn't an isolated incident. It was her monthly cut.”
Emily leaned closer to the camera.
She was no longer the quiet wife. She was an executioner.
“Sienna claims I tore my own dress. Grant claims I’m insane.”
Emily pulled a secondary phone from her pocket and held it up to the screen.
“This is a voice recording from a security camera in the hotel hallway, timestamped exactly twenty minutes before the gala began. I accessed it using the hotel's master security override—which Grant’s father paid for, ironically.”
She pressed play.
Grant’s voice filled the room, harsh and cruel. “Just keep her calm until the donors write the checks, Sienna. Once the baby is born, I’ll have her declared unfit. The pre-nup is ironclad if she’s institutionalized. Then it’s just you and me.”
Sienna’s giggle echoed through the tiny speaker. “Make sure you rip that ugly dress she bought. I want her humiliated.”
Emily paused the audio.
The silence that followed was deafening, even through a screen.
“I am not crazy,” Emily said softly. “I am a mother protecting her child from monsters.”
She looked down at the hem of her sweater, tracing an imaginary line where the blue ribbon used to be.
“The IRS has the original digital files. The FBI has the server logs. Grant, Richard, Sienna… I told you I wasn't the one standing there with my hands on someone else.”
She stared directly into the lens.

“Checkmate.”
She ended the broadcast.
