Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Maddox

The fallout wasn't just a scandal anymore.
It was a criminal investigation.
By 5:00 PM, federal agents were raiding the Maddox Holdings corporate headquarters.
News helicopters circled the glass building in downtown Dallas like vultures.
Julian kept the news on mute in the corner of the safe house, watching the empires crumble in high definition.
Emily sat on the couch, rubbing her belly, feeling a strange, hollow peace.
Her phone rang. It was an unknown number, but she answered it anyway.
“You bitch.”
It was Grant. He sounded frantic, breathless, completely unhinged.
“Grant. I’m surprised they let you keep your phone.”
“You ruined everything!” he screamed. The sound of sirens wailed faintly in the background of his call. “My father is having a heart attack! The board just ousted me! Sienna took a flight to Dubai and drained our joint account!”
Emily felt a grim smile tug at her lips.
Sienna had abandoned him the second the money dried up. There was no honor among thieves.
“I didn't ruin anything, Grant,” Emily said. “I just stopped covering up the ruin you created.”
“I’m going to prison, Emily! Do you understand that? Your son’s father is going to prison!”
“My son’s father died the day he decided a mistress and a stolen dollar were worth more than his family,” Emily replied. Her voice was ice. “Do not ever call this number again. The next time you speak to me, it will be through my lawyer. Goodbye, Grant.”
She hung up and blocked the number.
Julian looked over from his laptop. “FBI just arrested Richard at the hospital. He faked the heart attack trying to get out of the building.”
Emily nodded slowly.
It was over.
The dragons were dead. The castle was burning.
She was free.
Suddenly, a sharp, piercing pain ripped across her lower abdomen.
She gasped, her hand flying to her stomach. She doubled over on the couch, squeezing her eyes shut.
“Emily?” Julian was out of his chair in a second, rushing to her side. “What is it?”
“It’s…” She gritted her teeth, breathing through the massive contraction. “It’s early. But I think he’s coming.”
Julian didn't panic. He grabbed his keys and helped her stand.
“Let’s go to the hospital. A safe one. We’re ready for this.”
Emily leaned heavily on him as they walked out into the fading evening light.
