Chapter 3 - The Seed of Doubt

The drive back from the hospital was quiet, but it wasn't the heavy, suffocating silence I had grown used to over the past twelve months. It was a light, breathable quiet. The rain began to patter against the windshield of Adrian’s car, washing away the grime of the city, much like the truth was washing away my lingering shame.

“Are you okay?” Adrian asked, keeping his eyes on the road, though I could feel his protective awareness radiating toward me.

I looked down at my hands. They weren't shaking. For the first time in a year, I wasn't fighting back tears. “I am. I really am. I thought facing them would break me again, but all I felt was... pity.”

Adrian smiled softly, turning the steering wheel smoothly. “Truth has a funny way of doing that. It strips away the monsters in our closets and reveals them for what they really are: just scared people hiding in the dark. But you know this isn't over, Claire. The legal implications of what we’ve uncovered are massive. He stole your charity foundation under the premise of a highly prejudiced settlement.”

“I know,” I replied, my tone hardening. “And I want it all back.”

Meanwhile, across the city in a sprawling, multi-million dollar mansion that used to be my home, a suffocating tension had taken residence.

Ethan sat in his mahogany-paneled study, staring at a glass of scotch he hadn't taken a sip from. The baby was crying upstairs, a shrill, piercing sound that usually filled him with pride. Tonight, it felt like needles in his brain.

Madison hovered in the doorway, wringing her hands. She had changed out of her hospital clothes and into a silk robe, trying to project vulnerability and softness. It was a tactic that had always worked on Ethan before.

“Ethan, please come to bed,” she murmured, stepping into the dim light of the study. “Leo is teething, he’s just fussy. We’re a family. You can’t let Claire’s bitter games tear us apart.”

Ethan didn't look at her. His mind was replaying the encounter in the hospital hallway on a continuous, agonizing loop. The report proving that Claire was never infertile. If Claire was healthy... why did they suffer through three years of negative pregnancy tests? Why did they cry in doctors' offices?

Unless the problem wasn't Claire.

“I booked an appointment for tomorrow morning,” Ethan said into the silence, his voice devoid of emotion.

Madison stopped dead in her tracks. “An appointment? For what?”

“A full fertility evaluation. For myself,” he replied, finally turning his head to look at her. The cold, analytical look in his eyes made Madison physically recoil. “At a private clinic completely unaffiliated with St. Catherine’s or anyone we know.”

“Ethan, that’s ridiculous!” Madison shrieked, her carefully crafted facade cracking. “You have a son! You’re a father! Why would you humiliate yourself like this? It’s a trick. Claire is just trying to poison your mind!”

“If it’s a trick, then the test will prove it,” Ethan stated, standing up from his leather chair. He walked slowly toward her, his imposing figure casting a long shadow. “If I am perfectly healthy, and I am the father of the boy upstairs, then I will personally sue Claire and Dr. Vale for defamation and destroy them both. But...”

He paused, leaning down so his face was inches from hers. Madison was trembling violently now.

“But, Maddie, if that test comes back and says something else... I swear to God, I will burn your world to the ground.”

He walked past her, leaving her standing alone in the dark study, the sound of the crying baby upstairs suddenly sounding very, very foreign.
