Chapter 8 - A New Dawn

Two years later.
The garden of our new home was in full bloom. The scent of jasmine and roses filled the warm evening air. I sat on the porch swing, a soft blanket draped over my lap, watching the sunset paint the sky in brilliant shades of orange and purple.
The Claire Hayes Foundation had not only recovered but expanded, opening three new educational centers for underprivileged youth across the state. Without Ethan’s toxic presence, the charity was thriving, doing exactly the kind of good work I had always dreamed of.
The front door opened, and Adrian stepped out onto the porch. He had just returned from a long day at the hospital, but his face lit up the moment he saw me. He walked over, leaned down, and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to my forehead.
“How are my two favorite people in the world doing?” he asked, his voice filled with a warmth that still made my heart flutter.
I smiled, placing a hand over my swollen belly. I was seven months pregnant. A little girl.
“We’re perfect,” I murmured, leaning my head against his arm as he sat next to me on the swing. “She’s been kicking all afternoon. I think she’s going to be a soccer player.”
Adrian chuckled, placing his large, warm hand over mine on my stomach, waiting patiently until he felt the tiny, rhythmic thumps from within. His eyes softened with absolute wonder and love. “She’s going to be brilliant and unstoppable, just like her mother.”
We sat there in comfortable silence, watching the stars begin to prick through the twilight sky.
Every now and then, snippets of news from my old life would reach me. I knew that Madison was working as a waitress in a diner three towns over, struggling to raise a child that Marcus Thorne refused to acknowledge or support. I knew that Ethan was currently serving a three-year sentence in a minimum-security facility for corporate fraud, his reputation completely destroyed, his wealth entirely gone.
But those details felt like they belonged to a different lifetime, a book I had closed a long time ago.

They had tried to convince me that I was a barren, useless woman. They had tried to bury me beneath their lies and their greed. But they didn't realize that by stripping away everything I thought I wanted, they forced me to find everything I actually needed.
I looked up at Adrian, feeling the strong, steady beat of his heart next to mine, and the miraculous little life growing inside me. The nightmare was over. The dawn had arrived. And my life—my real, beautiful, undeniably fertile life—was just beginning.
