Chapter 10 - The Accusation

The accusation hung in the opulent study like the smell of ozone before a lightning strike. Delaney stepped back, her breath catching in her throat as Raymond’s finger pointed squarely at her chest.

"She’s a spy," Raymond continued, his voice smooth and calculated, designed to sound like an objective prosecutor presenting a slam-dunk case to a jury. "Think about it, Julian. The eastern syndicate needed a way to infiltrate the family circle without raising alarms. Who better than an insignificant waitress with a fabricated sob story about a childhood debt? She manipulated the old woman’s sentimentality to get inside the perimeter."

"That's a lie," Delaney snapped, stepping forward, her hands shaking with furious indignation. "I didn't even know who she was until five minutes ago!"

"Everyone says that when they get caught," Raymond replied smoothly, not even bothering to look at her as he addressed Julian. "Check the security logs. Her apartment eviction notice was filed by a shell company tied directly to the eastern boss, Dominic Rossi. It was a staged setup to make her look like a victim so she'd have an excuse to cling to your mother."

Julian didn't speak. He stared at Raymond, his expression unreadable, the amber liquid in his glass swirling in slow, hypnotic circles.

The old woman stepped between Delaney and Raymond, her eyes flashing with a dangerous, icy fury that silenced the room instantly. "Raymond," she said, her voice cutting through the air like a razor. "In all the years you've served my son, you have never once learned when to keep your mouth shut."

"I'm just protecting the family, Madam," Raymond replied smoothly, though a flicker of genuine nervousness crossed his eyes. "The evidence—”

"The evidence," Julian interrupted, his voice dangerously quiet, "is that you arrived in this room unsummoned, carrying an accusation against a civilian before my enforcers even returned from the perimeter."

Raymond’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "Boss, surely you don't believe a random waitress over your own chief counsel?"

Julian pushed off the desk slowly, setting his glass down with a soft clink. He walked toward Raymond with the slow, deliberate pace of a predator stalking a wounded deer.

"Marcus called me from the perimeter five minutes ago," Julian said softly, stopping two feet away from Raymond. "He didn't find the traitor among the guards. But he did check the private server logs in the communications wing. The IP address that uploaded my mother's safehouse coordinates to Dominic Rossi wasn't from an external hack. It was routed through a terminal registered to a private office on the third floor."

Raymond’s face drained of color in an instant. His eyes darted toward the mahogany doors, but two armed guards had already silently stepped inside, blocking the exit.

"An office," Julian continued, his voice rising just enough to vibrate against the oak walls, "that only two people in this entire estate have the biometric clearance to access: Myself. And my chief legal counsel, Raymond Vance."
