Chapter 5 - The Man in the Trench Coat

"Step away from the table, miss," the man in the trench coat said. His voice was low, cultured, and carried an unmistakable weight of authority that demanded immediate obedience.

Delaney didn't move. She kept her body positioned squarely between the man and the old woman, her hands resting flat on the table. "She's with me. Can I help you with something? We're kind of in the middle of a family conversation."

The man took another step closer. Up close, Delaney could see the faint, jagged scar running along his jawline, half-hidden by his dark stubble. His eyes were cold, sharp, and intensely analytical.

"That woman is not your mother," the man said smoothly, his tone conversational yet laced with steel. "And you are playing a very dangerous game with pieces you don't understand, Miss Ward."

Delaney’s blood ran cold. He knew her name. Not just her face, but her full name. That meant he hadn't just walked in off the street; he had investigated her before setting foot inside the diner.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Delaney replied, forcing her voice to remain steady. "She's my mother. Now, if you're not going to order anything, I have to ask you to leave. We're closed soon."

The man ignored her entirely. He shifted his gaze past Delaney's shoulder, locking eyes with the old woman who sat huddled in the shadows of the booth.

"The boss has been looking for you for three days, Madam," the man said, lowering his head in a faint, respectful nod. "The council is tearing itself apart. If the eastern faction finds you before we do, there won't be enough left of Providence to bury."

The old woman slowly raised her head. The trembling in her hands had stopped completely, replaced by a cold, regal dignity that transformed her soaked rags into something resembling royal robes.

"Let them tear it apart, Marcus," the old woman said, her voice steady and clear. "My son built this empire on blood and silence. If he cannot protect his own house from the rats he invited in, then let the whole thing burn."

Marcus sighed, running a hand over his scarred jaw. "He is tearing the city apart looking for you. Every safehouse has been raided. Every loyalist is being interrogated. He doesn't care about the council right now. He only cares that his mother vanished into the rain."

Delaney sat frozen between them, the pieces of the puzzle violently slamming together in her mind. Her son. Not just any man, but the invisible hand that controlled the entire criminal underworld of Providence. And she had just spent the last twenty minutes feeding him soup and putting wool socks on his mother.

"I'm not going back with you," the old woman declared, her tone absolute. "Not while he is still breathing."

Marcus didn't argue. He simply turned his cold eyes back toward Delaney. "You've done a very foolish, very kind thing tonight, Miss Ward. But kindness in our world is a death sentence. Pack your things. You're coming with us, too."
