Chapter 8 - The Reckoning

The rain had finally stopped, leaving behind a thick, eerie fog that rolled over the manicured lawns of the Kane estate. Floodlights illuminated the driveway, casting long, dramatic shadows against the stone walls of the mansion. It was the exact spot where, just days prior, I had been thrown into the dirt, humiliated and bareheaded.

Now, the tables had turned.

Vivienne Kane was dragged out into the courtyard by two loyal guards. Her silk dress was rumpled, her perfect hair disheveled, but her eyes still burned with malice. When she saw her brother, Marcus, kneeling on the wet asphalt with a bloody bandage wrapped around his hand, her face went completely pale.

Roman stood next to me, his arm wrapped securely around my waist to support my weight. I wore the green silk scarf proudly, standing tall as the mistress of the house.

"Roman," Vivienne said, her voice shaking but still trying to maintain her authoritative tone. "What is the meaning of this? You cannot treat your mother and your uncle like common criminals."

"You are worse than common criminals, mother," Roman said, his voice cutting through the fog like a blade. "You are traitors to the family name. You tried to murder my child to secure your own power. You conspired with Marcus to initiate a coup against me."

"We did it for the survival of the syndicate!" Vivienne shrieked, pointing at me. "Look at her! She’s a nobody! A girl from Queens who knows nothing of our world! She will destroy everything your father built!"

"My father didn't trust you, Vivienne," I spoke up, stepping forward out of Roman’s shadow. My voice was steady, carried by an inner strength I didn't know I possessed until tonight. "He knew you were a parasite. He knew that the only way to save the Kane empire from tearing itself apart from its own greed was to leave it to someone who wasn't poisoned by your bloodline. He chose my daughter because she will be raised with honor, not malice."

Vivienne looked at me, her teeth bared in hatred. "You think you’ve won? You think you can survive this life?"

"She already has," Roman stepped in front of me, shielding me from her gaze. "Matteo."

Matteo stepped forward, holding a pair of heavy, rusted shears—the very same ones Vivienne’s maids had used on my hair.

Vivienne’s eyes went wide with horror as she realized what was coming. "No... Roman, please. Not this. Anything but this."

"You told my wife that girls like her don't become Kane wives, they become lessons," Roman said, his face completely devoid of mercy. "Tonight, mother, you are the lesson. Force her to her knees."

The guards pushed Vivienne down onto the wet asphalt. She fought and screamed, a undignified spectacle, as Matteo took the shears and began to ruthlessly cut away her long, dyed black hair, letting the strands fall into the puddles around her feet. She wept openly, her vanity completely shattered in front of the remaining guards and captains who watched in silence.

"As for you, Marcus," Roman turned to his uncle. "You are banished from New York territory. If I see your face or the face of any of your men past the state line, it will be an act of war. You have one hour to pack your bags and leave."

Marcus didn't say a word. He stood up, clutching his ruined hand, and stumbled toward one of the remaining cars, leaving his sister weeping on the driveway.

When it was over, Vivienne sat in the dirt, her head jaggedly shorn, her dignity entirely stripped away, looking exactly like she had tried to make me look.

"Take her to the airport," Roman ordered the guards. "Send her to the estate in Sicily. She is never to return to American soil. If she steps foot on a plane back here, kill her."

Roman turned to me, his eyes softening as he looked at my tired face. "Let’s go home, Bianca. It’s time to prepare for our daughter’s arrival."
