Chapter 1 - The Invisible Owner

The rain hit the pavement in heavy, freezing sheets, but I didn't pull my oversized, ragged coat tighter. I needed to look the part. For two years, I had traveled the world, stepping away from the daily operations of the Elysium Resort Group to recover from a grief that had almost broken me. I left my life’s work in the hands of my own flesh and blood. My cousin, Richard.
I thought family meant loyalty. I was a fool.
Rumors had reached me in Europe. Whispers of plummeting employee morale, mysterious financial leaks, and a culture of cruelty that violated everything I had built. So, I didn't come back in a private jet. I didn't announce my return to the board of directors. I came back as a ghost. I came back disguised as a beggar, standing outside the flagship resort I had designed with my own two hands.
The glass doors of the grand lobby slid open, letting out a blast of warm, vanilla-scented air. I stepped inside, my battered boots squeaking against the imported Italian marble. The lobby was breathtaking—towering crystal chandeliers, a grand champagne tower, and velvet lounges. But the beauty felt hollow.
"Hey! You! Get out of here!"
The voice was shrill, dripping with entitlement. I turned to see Vanessa, Richard’s wife. She was draped in designer silk, her fingers glittering with diamonds that were undoubtedly bought with my company's money. She marched toward me, her heels clicking aggressively against the stone.
"I just need to sit out of the rain," I mumbled, keeping my head down, letting my unwashed, tangled wig obscure my face.
"This is a luxury resort, not a shelter for trash," Vanessa sneered, her face twisting in disgust. She didn't recognize me. She only saw someone she deemed beneath her.
"Please," I rasped. "Just for a moment."
Vanessa didn't call security. She wanted the power trip for herself. She lunged forward, her manicured claws digging into the fabric of my coat. She grabbed a decorative velvet rope chain from a stanchion nearby, her eyes wild with a sadistic glee.
"Security is too slow," she hissed, looping the heavy chain around my neck like a leash. "I'll take the trash out myself."

She yanked hard. The metal bit into my skin. I stumbled, allowing her to drag me across the lobby floor. Guests gasped, raising their phones to record. No one stepped in. The manager stood frozen behind the desk, terrified of crossing the boss's wife.
I let her drag me. I let the cameras roll. I needed the world to see exactly what had become of my empire. And then, I stopped fighting. I planted my feet, reached into my ragged shirt, and pulled out the heavy gold medallion I had hidden against my chest.
