Chapter 2 - The Founder's Return

Silence crashed over the room. Red security lights washed the walls in pulses of warning, triggered by the commotion.

Vanessa’s hand fell slack. The velvet rope slipped from her fingers.

The heavy gold medallion caught the light of the chandeliers. It wasn't just a piece of jewelry. It was the Elysium Founder’s Crest—a badge only one person in the world possessed.

The manager rushed from behind the desk, his face draining of all color. He bowed his head so fast he almost lost his balance. “Madam Founder… I did not recognize you… please—“

I lifted the chain from around my neck. The skin beneath throbbed, already marked red. I let it fall between us with a sharp, metallic clatter that echoed through the dead-silent lobby.

I looked at Vanessa. She stood frozen, eyes wide, trembling from head to toe. The smug superiority had vanished, replaced by an absolute, suffocating terror.

“You dragged the owner of this resort across her own lobby,“ I said quietly. My voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the room like a blade.

Vanessa swayed, her breath catching in her throat. “Amelia… wait… I didn’t know… I thought—“

“You thought poverty made me trash,“ I said, standing tall, letting the ragged coat fall from my shoulders to reveal the crisp, tailored suit I wore underneath. “And that your husband’s position made you untouchable.“

I turned to the room. Every phone was still raised. Every eye was fixed on me.

“Nobody leaves,“ I said, my tone echoing with absolute authority. “Secure all exits. Preserve every recording from this lobby. Bring me every access log, every authorization, and every transaction signed by Richard or Vanessa in the last eighteen months. Now.“

The manager nodded frantically, sweat beading on his forehead. “Immediately, Madam. Right away!“

Vanessa backed away a step. Then another, her voice pleading. “Amelia… please… we can talk… Richard can explain everything…“

I looked at her, then past her—straight at the man standing near the champagne tower. Richard. My own cousin. He had watched every second. He had seen his wife put a leash on a human being, and he had said nothing. And now, he turned to walk away, trying to slip into the shadows.

“Richard,“ I said.

He froze. Slowly, he turned. His face was pale, his expression caught somewhere between embarrassment and sheer panic.

“You had two years,“ I said, closing the distance between us. “Two years to come to me with whatever was happening here. Instead… you let her put a chain around my neck in my own lobby.“

Richard opened his mouth. No words came. He looked like a cornered rat.

May you like

I picked up my bag from the marble floor. I brushed past Vanessa, past the manager, past all the silent, staring faces. At the doorway to the private elevators, I paused and looked back at the empire that had been poisoned in my absence.

“Everyone has been lying to me,“ I said. “Starting today… everyone tells the truth.“
