Chapter 3 - The Paper Trail

The sun rose over Denver, casting a brilliant, blinding light against the fresh snow. Inside the safe house, it was quiet. Lily was still sleeping, her small chest rising and falling rhythmically. I sat at the kitchen island, a cup of black coffee in my hand, watching the digital web of Grant Carlisle’s life unravel on my screen.
People leave footprints. Criminals leave evidence. Arrogant fools leave entire maps.
Grant was an arrogant fool.
For the last three years, he had been working as a senior financial analyst for a mid-sized logistics firm. He made a decent salary, but nothing that could support the lifestyle he liked to project. I had always subsidized our lives, paying for the house, the cars, the vacations. I never cared about the money; my family’s generational wealth had always just been a tool to ensure Lily had a good life.
But while I was undercover, Grant hadn't just been playing house with Vanessa Vale. He had been using my absence to execute a sloppy, desperate embezzlement scheme.
I clicked through the offshore routing numbers I had intercepted from his private emails.
He had been transferring funds from his company’s client accounts into a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands. And who was listed as the primary beneficiary of that shell corporation?
Vanessa Vale.
I took a slow sip of my coffee. The picture was coming into perfect, terrifying focus.
Vanessa wasn't just a mistress. She was a co-conspirator. They had been stealing from Grant’s employers to fund a lavish escape. But they needed more capital to disappear completely, which was why they had filed for a rapid divorce, hoping to claim half of my assets and force a sale of the house before I returned from my mission. They assumed the bureaucratic machine of the federal government would keep me away for months, or perhaps they hoped I wouldn't survive the operation at all.
They had underestimated me on every conceivable level.
My phone buzzed on the counter. It was Marcus.
“Morning, Evelyn,” the lawyer said, his voice crisp. “I have updates. The eviction was successful last night. Security escorted Mr. Carlisle and Ms. Vale off the property at exactly 2:15 AM. They were allowed one suitcase each.”
“Did they put up a fight?” I asked, my eyes scanning a PDF of Grant’s forged signatures.
“Mr. Carlisle threatened to sue, of course. He claimed he had tenants' rights. The security team informed him that since the property belongs to a federal trust and he is currently under investigation for financial irregularities regarding that trust, he has no rights. They left in a taxi.”
“Where did they go?”
“The Four Seasons downtown. He tried to book the penthouse suite.”
I smiled grimly. “Let me guess. The card declined.”
Marcus chuckled. It was a dry, lawyerly sound. “All of them declined. The Platinum Amex, the Visa Black, even his personal debit card. The hotel desk manager refused them entry. Last I heard from our private investigator, they spent the night in a two-star motel near the interstate.”
“Good,” I said. “Keep the pressure on. I want a complete freeze on everything he touches. I want his car repossessed today. He missed a lease payment three days ago, didn't he?”
“He did. I’ll make the call to the dealership. But Evelyn, he has hired a lawyer. A pitbull named Richard Sterling. They filed an emergency motion this morning claiming you kidnapped Lily and are unfit for custody due to PTSD from your military/federal service.”
My grip on the coffee mug tightened until my knuckles turned white.
“Sterling is a bottom-feeder,” I said coldly. “He’ll drop Grant the second he realizes Grant can’t pay his retainer. Send Sterling the financial freeze notices. And Marcus?”
“Yes?”
“Draft the divorce papers. Irreconcilable differences, full custody to me, no alimony. But don’t file them yet. I’m going to hand-deliver them.”
“Understood. Be careful, Evelyn. A cornered rat bites.”
“I’m not worried about rats, Marcus. I exterminate them.”
I hung up the phone and walked quietly into the bedroom. Lily was awake. She was sitting up in the middle of the large bed, her knees pulled to her chest, staring blankly at the wall.
My heart shattered all over again.
I sat on the edge of the bed and reached out, gently stroking her tangled hair. She flinched instinctively, then recognized my touch and leaned into my hand, closing her eyes.
“Good morning, my brave girl,” I whispered.
She didn't answer. She just held onto my wrist.
“We’re not going back to that house for a while,” I told her softly. “We’re going to stay here, where it’s safe. Just you and me. No one will ever hurt you again. I promise you, Lily. On my life.”
She looked up at me, her big brown eyes filled with an unspoken ocean of pain. She reached out and touched my cheek with her small fingers, tracing the line of my jaw.
She couldn't speak, but her eyes asked the question loudly enough: Are you staying?
“I’m never leaving you again,” I said, pulling her into my arms. “Mommy is staying right here.”
As I held my silent daughter, my resolve hardened into diamond. Grant had taken her voice. He had allowed a monster to physically harm my child in my own home.

Financial ruin wasn't enough. Losing the house wasn't enough.
I was going to burn his entire world to ashes, and I was going to make sure Vanessa Vale lit the match.
