Chapter 4 - The Trap is Set

For three days, the safe house became our sanctuary. I cooked Lily’s favorite meals—pancakes with strawberry syrup, macaroni and cheese from scratch. We watched cartoons, we built pillow forts, and we colored in books. Slowly, microscopically, the tension in her small shoulders began to ease. She still hadn't spoken, but she had stopped trembling when the floorboards creaked.

While Lily colored or watched movies, I orchestrated the destruction of Grant Carlisle.

By Tuesday afternoon, the trap was perfectly set.

Grant was growing desperate. His desperate emails to my secure account were piling up. First, they were angry, demanding I return his daughter and his house. Then, they became pleading. He talked about "misunderstandings" and how Vanessa had simply "lost her temper once." He begged for access to the bank accounts, claiming he needed to eat.

I ignored them all. I let him starve.

At 4:00 PM, my phone rang with a number I recognized. Director Vance, my boss at the federal agency.

“Evelyn,” Vance’s gravelly voice came through the speaker. “I’m looking at a very interesting police report filed in Denver. A Mr. Grant Carlisle is claiming a rogue federal agent kidnapped his daughter and is holding her hostage.”

“Is that so, Sir?” I asked, leaning against the kitchen counter, watching Lily carefully draw a purple butterfly.

“The local PD was ready to send a SWAT team to your registered address until my office intercepted the flag,” Vance continued. “I informed the Chief of Police that Agent Evelyn Reid is on a classified debriefing leave, and any domestic disputes involving her are under federal jurisdiction. I told them to stand down.”

“Thank you, Director.”

“Don't thank me yet. What the hell is going on, Evie? You finish a high-stress op, and two days later you’re nuking your husband’s life from orbit?”

“He isn't my husband anymore, Sir. And he allowed his mistress to abuse my daughter.”

There was a long, heavy silence on the line. When Vance spoke again, his voice had lost its bureaucratic detachment. It was ice cold.

“Do you need a team, Evelyn? I can have five guys off the books at his location in twenty minutes. We can make him disappear.”

The offer was genuine. In our line of work, we protected our own, and crimes against an agent's family were met with absolute, overwhelming force.

“No, Sir,” I said. “I appreciate it, but I’m handling this legally. Mostly.”

“Define mostly.”

“I’ve uncovered a massive embezzlement ring. Grant has been stealing from his firm, routing it through shell companies to his mistress. I’ve compiled the dossier. I just need you to fast-track it to the white-collar crime division.”

Vance chuckled darkly. “You’re handing him a federal indictment wrapped in a bow?”

“I’m burying him under a prison, Director. I’ll send the encrypted file in five minutes.”

“Done. Take as much time as you need with your girl, Evie. Your job is safe. Make him bleed.”

I hung up, feeling a profound sense of calm. The pieces were moving on the board exactly as I had positioned them.

That evening, I received a text from my private investigator. It contained a photo.

Grant and Vanessa were standing outside a high-end pawn shop in a sketchy part of town. Grant was holding the Rolex I had given him for our engagement. Vanessa was arguing with him, pointing aggressively at his chest. Her flawless hair was messy, her expensive coat looked rumpled, and the arrogant sneer she had worn in my living room was replaced by an ugly, desperate snarl.

They were turning on each other. The money was gone, the illusion of wealth had evaporated, and the reality of their situation was setting in.

But they still had one desperate play left.

Later that night, Marcus called.

“Evelyn, you need to know this. Grant’s lawyer, Sterling, managed to secure a mediator. Grant is claiming he has proof that you are mentally unstable and violently attacked his fiancée. He’s demanding a face-to-face mediation tomorrow at Sterling’s downtown office. He says if you don't show up with Lily, he’s going to the press to claim federal overreach and corruption.”

I smiled into the dark room.

Grant thought he was backing me into a corner. He thought he could use public pressure and a sleazy lawyer to intimidate me into a settlement. He wanted to look me in the eye and negotiate a payout.

“Tell Sterling I’ll be there,” I said. “But Lily stays with a trusted protector. I’ll come alone.”

“Are you sure, Evelyn? Sterling is a snake. He’ll try to trap you.”

“Let him try,” I said softly. “I have a dossier that says I hold all the cards. Tomorrow, we end this.”

I walked over to the closet and pulled out a garment bag I hadn't touched in years. Inside was a perfectly tailored, slate-grey designer suit. The armor of the world I had been born into, before I chose a badge and a gun.

Vanessa Vale thought she was a real woman. Grant thought he was a king in a castle he didn't own.

Tomorrow, they would meet the true owner.
