Chapter 3 - The Cage of Luxury

Dawn was breaking over the city skyline by the time Dominic’s car pulled through the wrought-iron gates of a sprawling estate nestled in the hills overlooking the bay.
Norah sat rigidly in the passenger seat of the armored Mercedes, staring out at the manicured lawns and towering stone walls.
She hadn’t been allowed to go back to her apartment.
1 of Dominic’s men had been dispatched to pack a single suitcase of her clothes while another went to her office to clear out her desk under the guise of an emergency medical leave.
Her entire life had been dismantled and relocated in less than 3 hours.
“Here we are,” Dominic said, cutting the engine.
He stepped out and opened her door, offering a gloved hand.
Norah ignored it, sliding out of the vehicle on her own and stumbling slightly on the gravel driveway.
She looked up at the monolithic glass-and-steel mansion that would now serve as her prison.
“Why am I here?” she asked, her voice cracking with exhaustion. “You could have set me up in a penthouse downtown. Why bring me to your home?”
“Because a penthouse leaks information,” Dominic replied, walking toward the grand double doors. “Here, you are safe. You have a dedicated suite on the third floor, complete with dual monitors, a high-speed terminal, and every financial report from my legitimate holdings and syndicate enterprises.”
He stopped at the threshold and looked back at her.
“You wanted to bury yourself in numbers? I am giving you an empire to balance.”
For the next 3 weeks, Norah lived in a blur of spreadsheets, coffee, and silence.
Her suite was luxurious, featuring velvet upholstery, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a marble bathroom that rivaled luxury hotels.
Yet, she felt like a caged bird in a gilded cage.
Guards rotated outside her heavy oak door.
Meals were delivered on silver trays by a housekeeper named Mrs. Gable, a stern older woman who never asked questions.
Norah worked 18 hours a day, scrubbing accounts, laundering illicit cash into legitimate real estate portfolios, and building airtight offshore tax structures that would have made Wall Street veterans weep.
She was brilliant, and Dominic knew it.
Every evening at 8:00 p.m., Dominic entered her suite without knocking.
He would review her progress, leaning over her shoulder, his chest brushing her back, his breath warm against her neck as he pointed out discrepancies or approved her strategies.
He never raised his voice.
He never threatened her again.
Instead, he watched her with a slow, smoldering intensity that terrified Norah more than any gun ever could.
He was studying her habits.
Learning what she liked to drink, how many sugars she put in her coffee, and the exact pitch of her voice when she was tired.

She was no longer just his captive auditor.
She was becoming his obsession.
