Chapter 2 - Seeds of Doubt and Whispers in the Dark

The rain did not stop for two days. It pounded against the roof, mirroring the pounding headache behind Maya’s eyes.

Oliver’s fever had spiked in the middle of the night, leaving Maya severely sleep-deprived. Evelyn had insisted on staying in the guest room "to help." But her version of helping consisted of standing in doorways, taking notes on her phone, and sighing loudly whenever Maya made a bottle.

"You look terrible, Maya," Evelyn said over breakfast. "Are you sure you’re mentally equipped to handle a chronically ill child today?"

"I'm fine, Evelyn. I just need a cup of coffee," Maya muttered, exhaustion heavy in her bones.

Ryan hurried into the kitchen, adjusting his tie. "Babe, I'm so sorry, but this merger is finalizing today. I have to go to the office."

Maya’s heart sank, but she forced a smile for her husband. "It's okay, Ryan. Go. We’ll be fine."

"Mom, thank you for staying to help her," Ryan said, kissing his mother’s cheek.

"Of course, darling. Someone needs to keep an eye on things," Evelyn replied, her smile sickly sweet.

As soon as the front door closed behind Ryan, the atmosphere in the house turned freezing cold. Maya went upstairs to the nursery to check on Oliver. He was sleeping, but his breathing was shallow.

She reached for his daily medication, but she paused. The bottles on the changing table had been moved. She always kept the emergency inhaler on the left, next to the thermometer. Now, it was on the right, hidden behind a box of wipes.

A shiver ran down Maya’s spine. She had felt this paranoia creeping in for weeks. Things going missing. Items being rearranged. She had even caught Evelyn whispering to someone on the phone about "custody precedents" and "emergency interventions."

When Maya confronted her about it, Evelyn had gaslit her flawlessly. "You're hearing things, Maya. You're sleep-deprived. This paranoia is exactly why Ryan is so worried about you."

But Ryan wasn't worried. Evelyn was telling Ryan to be worried.

Maya walked over to the closet to grab a fresh blanket for the crib. As she reached past the row of tiny winter coats, she noticed something odd. A small, dark lens peeking out from the upper shelf.

But before she could investigate further, Evelyn walked into the room. "What are you doing in the dark?" Evelyn snapped, her voice sharp as glass.

"Just getting a blanket," Maya said, her heart suddenly racing.

"Leave him be. You hover too much. It’s unnatural," Evelyn commanded.

Maya stepped away from the closet, her maternal instincts screaming that something was terribly wrong. Evelyn was too calm. She was too dressed up for a rainy morning indoors. She was wearing that perfect pearl-gray suit, her hair styled as if she were expecting an audience.

Maya looked at her sick child, then at the calculating woman standing in the doorway. She realized with horrifying clarity that she was completely isolated.

The storm was trapping them inside. No one could hear her. No one was coming to help. And Evelyn Whitmore was finally ready to make her move.
