Chapter 5 - A House of Lies and Blood

Ryan Whitmore took the stairs two at a time, his heart hammering against his ribs. He had come home through the pouring rain, soaked to the bone, expecting a quiet house. Instead, he heard his mother screaming for her life.
He burst into the nursery and froze. The room looked like a crime scene. A heavy lamp lay shattered on the floor. Medicine bottles were scattered across the carpet. A tiny blue blanket lay twisted beside the crib.
And in the middle of the destruction, his wife was bleeding.
Maya sat on the carpet with thick, red blood running from her nose, soaking into her shirt. She was clutching their three-year-old son against her chest, rocking him desperately.
Oliver’s skin burned with fever. His breaths came in shallow, terrifying wheezes. His tiny fingers gripped Maya’s sleeve, his eyes rolling back in exhaustion.
Ryan dropped to his knees beside them, the world spinning. "What happened?!" he yelled, his hands hovering over his bleeding wife.
Maya opened her mouth, a sob choking her throat. But before she could speak, his mother answered for her.
"She lost control," Evelyn said, her voice shaking with fake terror.
Evelyn stood beside the dresser, her pearl-gray suit torn at the collar, her arm dramatically clutched to her chest. Her hair was still flawless. Her story was already perfectly prepared. Because apparently showing up overdressed to a family disaster was part of the evil-mother-in-law starter pack. 💀
"She became completely hysterical, Ryan," Evelyn cried, squeezing out fake tears. "She started throwing things. She attacked me without warning. You should never have left this unstable woman alone with a sick child!"
Ryan looked at his mother, then down at his wife. Maya shook her head violently through her tears, blood splattering the carpet.
"She took his inhaler," Maya choked out, barely able to breathe herself.
The entire room went dead silent. Except for the horrifying sound of Oliver struggling for air.
Ryan slowly turned toward the changing table. Oliver’s emergency inhaler case was open. And it was completely empty.
The blood drained from Ryan’s face, a sickening realization washing over him. He stood up, towering over his mother. "Where is my son’s inhaler?" Ryan asked, his voice deathly quiet.
Evelyn’s confidence flickered. Only for a fraction of a second. Then she lifted her chin, looking at Ryan as though he had asked a deeply unreasonable question. "Maya is confused, darling," she said soothingly. "She threw it somewhere in her rage."
Maya pulled Oliver closer, her voice fierce despite her injuries. "She took it from me! She said I would never see him again unless I signed the papers!"
Ryan rose to his full height. For thirty-five years, Evelyn Whitmore had controlled every room she entered. She decided who was believed, who was blamed, and who disappeared when they stopped obeying her.
But this time, his wife was bleeding. His son was suffocating. And his mother was still acting like she was the victim. Classic narcissist behavior: Create the disaster. Control the story. Then demand sympathy. 🤡
Ryan stepped between Evelyn and his fragile family. "Get away from them," he growled.
Evelyn stared at him in utter disbelief. "You would throw your own mother out over her?!"
May you like
Ryan’s voice trembled with a rage he had never felt before. "That is my wife." He pointed a shaking finger at Oliver. "And that is my dying son."
Without breaking eye contact with the monster who raised him, Ryan pulled out his phone and dialed 911.
