Chapter 10 - Stormlight

Six months later, July sunlight glittered across Lake Michigan.

Clara sat on the stone balcony of the Lake Forest estate, watching Gabriel hold Dominic in the air while the baby shrieked with laughter. The sound carried over the water, bright enough to make even the guards at the terrace doors smile.
The world had changed.
Evelyn Pierce had been convicted on fraud, witness tampering, and conspiracy charges. Gregory had survived his wounds and now waited for trial on kidnapping and attempted murder charges, abandoned by every friend who had once toasted his name.
Pierce Global Logistics had been dismantled and sold in pieces.
The cleanest assets were purchased by a new holding company.
Clara’s company.
At first, Gabriel had wanted to give it to her as revenge.
Clara turned it into something else.
A legitimate logistics firm with strict oversight, fair contracts, and a foundation for women escaping domestic abuse, medical fraud, and financial coercion. She named the foundation Stormlight.
When reporters asked why, Clara gave the same answer every time.
“Because sometimes the worst night of your life shows you who is willing to stand in the rain.”
Gabriel came to sit beside her, Dominic sleepy against his chest.
“You look pleased with yourself,” Clara said.
“Our son laughed at Matteo’s face. I consider that a developmental milestone.”
Clara smiled and leaned into him.
For a while, they watched the lake.
Then she said, “They used to tell me monsters lived in the dark.”
Gabriel looked down at her.
Clara touched the scar on his knuckle, then his wedding ring.
“They were wrong,” she whispered. “Some monsters stand between you and the dark until you remember how to find the light yourself.”
Gabriel was quiet for a long moment.
Then he kissed her temple.
“I am trying to be less of a monster.”
“I know.”
“For you.”
“For him too,” Clara said, touching Dominic’s tiny foot.
Gabriel looked at the sleeping child, and something fierce softened in him.
“For both of you.”
Clara glanced toward the horizon, where the lake shimmered like glass under the summer sun.
Once, she had been barefoot in a freezing alley, certain the storm would be the end of her story.
Now her son slept safely in his father’s arms, her name sat on buildings that once belonged to people who tried to erase her, and the man beside her had learned that power was not only the ability to destroy.
Sometimes power was choosing not to.
Sometimes love was not the soft hand that found you in perfect weather.
Sometimes love was the dangerous hand that reached into the storm, pulled you from the mud, and then learned how to hold you gently.
Clara rested her head on Gabriel’s shoulder.
Dominic sighed in his sleep.
May you like
And far below, Lake Michigan shone like the whole world had finally been washed clean.
