Chapter 6 - Desperation in the Shadows

By Monday morning, Pierce Global Logistics was in free fall.

Trading paused. The European acquisition collapsed. Major clients suspended contracts. The board demanded emergency meetings while federal investigators, state prosecutors, and financial auditors descended on Pierce offices across the city.
The gala video was everywhere.
Not just Gabriel pinning Gregory to the banister.
Clara’s voice.
Her steady face.
Her hand over her belly as she told the world what had been done to her.
Women believed her first.
Then nurses.
Then former Pierce employees.
Then the first anonymous envelope arrived at a newsroom containing Evelyn’s private messages with Dr. Miller.
By Tuesday, Dr. Miller surrendered his license and agreed to cooperate.
By Wednesday, Evelyn Pierce was arrested in her Gold Coast mansion wearing silk pajamas and an expression of absolute disbelief.
By Thursday, Gregory was removed as CEO.
The board meeting lasted eleven minutes.
“You are a liability,” the chairman said.
Gregory stood at the head of the mahogany table, bruises still faint around his throat. “My lawyers can fix this.”
“No. Your lawyers are now company lawyers, and the company is distancing itself from you.”
“My name is on the building.”
“Not by the end of the quarter.”
Security escorted him out through a side elevator.
Outside on Wacker Drive, the December wind slapped his face. His phone buzzed with frozen accounts, canceled cards, legal notices, reporters, threats, silence.
Clara had survived.
Clara had risen.
Clara had taken everything.
By nightfall, Gregory Pierce had stopped thinking like a man with something to lose.
He met Hector Cole in an abandoned warehouse south of downtown.
Hector ran a private crew that sold muscle to men too desperate to care what kind of people they hired. He was big, scarred, and cold-eyed, with no loyalty beyond payment.
Gregory slid an encrypted drive across a rusted table.
“Five million,” he said. “Untraceable.”
Hector picked it up. “For what?”
“I want Clara Falco.”
Hector studied him. “You want me to walk into Gabriel Falco’s house and take his pregnant wife?”
“She has medical appointments Bess,” Gregory snapped. “Find one. Take her alive. Falco will trade anything for her.”
Hector’s smile was thin.
“You understand,” he said, “if this goes wrong, Falco won’t call the police.”
May you like
Gregory’s eyes were fever-bright.
“I’m counting on it.”
