Chapter 6 - The Descent Into Charlotte and the Terminal Ambush

The heavy metal bulk of the Boeing 777 slammed onto the rain-slicked tarmac of Charlotte Douglas International Airport with a loud screech of rubber and a sudden, violent deceleration of reverse thrusters. Passengers began unbuckling their seatbelts, rustling overhead bins, and jostling into the aisles like ants escaping a flooded nest.

My heart hammered against my ribs, but my outward demeanor remained as calm and unshakeable as a mountain pass. I checked my worn leather wallet in my back pocket, ensured my truck keys were secure, and turned to Claire.

“Showtime,” I muttered.

Claire smoothed down her travel jacket, adjusted the silver ring on her finger, and took a deep, centering breath. “Remember, Mason. We met in Livingston. You drive eighteen-wheelers. And you’re not afraid of a corporate shark in a custom suit.”

“Never met one yet that could out-pull a Peterbilt,” I replied with a faint smirk.

We filed slowly out of our economy seats into the crowded aisle, inching our way toward the exit door. As we stepped past the first-class curtain, Grant was already waiting by the galley, blocking the natural flow of passengers with the arrogant entitlement of royalty. Behind him stood Evelyn, her face pale, her jaw set like iron.

Grant flashed a predatory, triumphant grin as he spotted us.

“Well,” Grant said smoothly, stepping directly into our path to bar our exit into the jet bridge. “The flight is over, Claire. The performance is finished. Give me the ring back, hand over your carry-on bag, and let’s go meet your mother’s guests.”

Claire didn't flinch. She stepped closer to me, sliding her hand firmly into mine, locking our fingers together so the silver ring caught the glaring fluorescent lights of the terminal.

“I’m not going anywhere with you, Grant,” Claire said, her voice ringing clear and steady above the shuffle of debarking passengers.

Grant’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before hardening into pure ice. “Don't be absurd. You don’t have a passport, you don’t have your identification, and this little truck driver can’t legally protect you from the immigration and customs authorities waiting at the international arrival gate.”

“She doesn't need a passport to walk out of this airport with her legal husband,” I stepped forward, putting myself squarely between Grant and Claire.

Grant sneered, looking down at my scuffed work boots with undisguised contempt. “Listen to me, you roadside nobody. You were a convenient prop for ten hours across the Atlantic. The moment you step past customs control without valid marriage documentation or joint residency proof, federal authorities will detain you both for immigration and travel fraud. Now step aside before I have airport security drag you off in handcuffs.”

Before I could deliver the crushing punchline we had rehearsed all night, a sharp, authoritative voice cut through the noise of the terminal.

“That won't be necessary, Grant.”
