Chapter 7 - Evelyn’s Counterstrike and the Federal Turnaround

Evelyn Bennett pushed past the cluster of confused flight attendants, stepping directly into the center of the jet bridge. Her posture was regal, her silver hair immaculate, and her eyes burned with a fierce, terrifying maternal wrath that made Grant physically recoil a half-step.

“Evelyn,” Grant said, his voice dropping its patronizing edge and taking on a sharp note of panic. “What are you doing? Tell this lunatic to get out of our way so we can get to the engagement dinner before eighty VIP guests start asking questions.”

“There is no engagement dinner, Grant,” Evelyn said, her voice echoing off the curved metal walls of the jet bridge. “And there will be no corporate merger.”

Grant let out a nervous, breathless laugh. “You’re exhausted from the flight. You don't know what you’re saying. The board members are already at the country club—”

“The board members received an emergency corporate audit notification ten minutes ago,” Evelyn interrupted, pulling a thick manila folder from her leather tote bag and slapping it squarely against Grant’s chest. “Filed directly through my legal counsel while we were descending over US airspace. It details every single unauthorized asset transfer, shell company diversion, and forged signature you’ve executed against Bennett Construction over the last fourteen months.”

Grant’s face turned the color of spoiled milk. All the arrogant color drained from his cheeks, leaving him looking hollow, desperate, and small.

“You... you’re bluffing,” Grant stammered, his hands shaking as he clutched the manila folder. “If you ruin me, your family’s financing dries up instantly. The company goes under—”

“The company survives,” Evelyn snapped, her voice like a whipcrack. “And you go to federal prison for corporate wire fraud and embezzlement.”

Grant spun around wildly, his eyes darting toward the terminal exit doors, searching for an escape route, before turning his fury back onto Claire. He lunged forward, his hand clawing toward Claire’s shoulder bag where he assumed she kept her travel documents.

“Give me that bag!” Grant snarled, dropping all pretense of corporate polish.

I didn't hesitate. Twelve years of loading heavy freight and handling unruly, aggressive truck-stop thugs taught me how to move fast when it mattered. I stepped directly into his path, caught his wrist in a iron grip, and twisted his arm downward with enough controlled leverage to drop a six-foot corporate executive straight to his knees on the industrial carpet.

Grant let out a sharp cry of pain, gasping for air as I pinned his arm behind his back without breaking a sweat.

“You dropped something, Mr. Grant,” I said coldly, reaching into his tailored suit breast pocket with my free hand and pulling out a dark blue leather passport case embossed with gold lettering. I flipped it open.

Claire Elizabeth Bennett.

I handed the passport directly to Claire, who took it with a steady, triumphant smile.

At that exact moment, two uniformed airport security officers, alerted by the commotion and Evelyn’s prior digital distress signal, pushed their way through the bottlenecked crowd of passengers in the jet bridge.

“Is there a problem here, ma’am?” the lead officer asked, looking directly at Evelyn.

Evelyn pointed a steady, accusing finger straight down at Grant, who was still pinned to the carpet beneath my grip.

“Officer, arrest this man,” Evelyn commanded clearly. “He has stolen property, forged corporate documents, and is actively wanted for federal financial embezzlement.”
