Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Whisper Campaign

By Monday morning, the fallout from Table Seven had metastasized across the city's elite circles.
Daniel sat at the head of the glass conference table on the forty-second floor of Rock Industries, listening to his chief operating officer read through a list of media inquiries. But Daniel wasn't thinking about stock prices or quarterly projections. His mind was replaying the way Lily's hands had looked when she corrected his sign.
"The gala coverage is picking up strange angles, Daniel," Andrew said, adjusting his glasses. "The society columnists are whispering about the scene at your table. Vivien Pell's PR team has been planting items suggesting you were 'distracted' and that your home life is... unstable. They're trying to frame the incident as corporate negligence. Investors are getting jittery about your public focus."
"Let them jitter," Daniel said coldly, not looking up from a children's medical pamphlet Sloan had given him before she left the gala.
"Daniel, your position on the hospital board is up for renewal next month," Andrew pressed. "Vivien controls half those votes. If you alienate her social network, you risk the foundation partnerships."
Before Daniel could reply, his phone buzzed on the desk. It was an alert from Lincoln Memorial Hospital's internal staff portal—a routine administrative notice, but attached to it was a memo regarding Dr. Sloan Hayes. Her department's grant funding, which had been pending final approval by the hospital's philanthropic committee (headed by none other than Vivien Pell), had just been indefinitely delayed due to "administrative compliance reviews."
Daniel's eyes narrowed. Vivien wasn't just gunning for his social standing; she was retaliating against the woman who had dared to cross her invisible lines.
"Cancel my afternoon meetings," Daniel said, standing up so abruptly his executive chair rolled back and hit the glass wall.

"All of them? Even the merger call with Tokyo?" Andrew asked, alarmed.
"Especially that one," Daniel snapped, grabbing his suit jacket. "Tell them Rock Industries has more important things to build."
