Chapter 8 - The Press Conference

Daniel didn't issue a written corporate statement through his PR firm. Instead, at four o'clock that afternoon, he booked the main auditorium of Lincoln Memorial Hospital, inviting every major news outlet, independent journalist, and medical blogger in the city.

There were no podiums, no teleprompters, and no expensive suits. Daniel walked onto the bare stage wearing a simple dark sweater. Beside him sat Sloan, calm and composed, and Lily, who wore her mother's mother-of-pearl comb in her hair and held her small meteorite tightly in her pocket.

Daniel sat down on the edge of the stage, dangling his legs over the front, right in front of the wall of flashing lenses. He held up his hands.

The room, anticipating a furious corporate tirade from the billionaire CEO, slowly fell into an absolute, breathless hush.

Daniel began to sign. His movements were no longer hesitant or clumsy; they were clear, deliberate, and powerful. Beside him, a certified interpreter translated his words into spoken English for the live broadcast:

"Two months ago, at a charity gala in this city, nine hundred people sat in a room and ignored a nine-year-old child because it was easier not to look," Daniel signed, his eyes scanning the camera lenses. "They called it a celebration of charity. It was actually a celebration of our collective failure to listen."

He paused, lowering his hands slightly, his jaw tight.

"Over the past week, a coordinated smear campaign has targeted Dr. Sloan Hayes—a brilliant, compassionate pediatric cardiologist whose only crime was kneeling down on a carpet to ask a lonely child if she wanted a green grape. Certain individuals, accustomed to manipulating public narratives for their own vanity, attempted to destroy her career with lies."

Daniel turned his head, looking directly at the camera representing Vivien Pell's network.

"Effective today, Rock Industries is permanently severing all financial ties, sponsorships, and partnerships with the Lumis Hotel charity committee and any foundation led by Vivien Ashworth Pell. Furthermore, we are establishing a ten-million-dollar permanent endowment for Lincoln Memorial Hospital, specifically dedicated to funding full-time medical sign-language interpreters for every deaf and hard-of-hearing child who enters these doors."

He looked down at Lily, who was watching him with a wide, shining expression, then back to the cameras.

"We are done ignoring people who don't shout. From now on, we listen."

He dropped his hands. The silence in the auditorium lasted for three full seconds before the entire room erupted into thunderous, roaring applause. Vivien Ashworth Pell’s social empire crumbled into dust before the evening news cycle even ended.
