Chapter 3 - THE UNMASKING OF THE IMPOSTOR

Natalie stumbled backward, her designer gown tangling around her silver heels. Her face, usually a masterpiece of cosmetic perfection, twisted into an ugly mask of panic and rage. She pointed a trembling finger at Chloe, her voice screeching hysterically.

"Lies! All of it lies! She’s a stalker! A psychotic nobody who couldn’t accept that she was just my maid! Grandfather, you’re losing your mind! Look at her! Does she look like a Vance? Look at her clothes! Look at her pathetic face!"

Chloe stood frozen, the heavy silver tray shaking in her hands. The memories rushed back like a tidal wave—the hospital room with smell of antiseptic, the bandages wrapped tightly around her face, the forged consent forms she was forced to sign under the threat of permanent ruin, and the cruel, mocking laughter of the real Natalie Vance as she assumed Chloe’s identity while Chloe was cast out into the gutter.

Arthur stepped down from the dais, his stride surprisingly firm and commanding for a man of his age. He walked past his shrieking granddaughter as if she were nothing more than an inconvenient piece of furniture. He stopped directly in front of Chloe, lifting the crystal glass of pearlescent champagne higher, presenting it to her with a solemn, reverent bow of his head.

"Drink, my child," Arthur instructed softly, his voice cutting through the deafening din of the ballroom. "It’s time to reclaim what was stolen. Drink from the cup of truth, and let the pretender choke on her own deceit."

Chloe looked down at the glass. Within the shimmering liquid, tiny bubbles danced under the crystal chandeliers, but there was something else—a faint, iridescent swirl that caught the light in an unusual way. It wasn't just champagne. It was a sacramental chalice of judgment.

With trembling fingers, Chloe reached out and took the stem of the glass. Her large, expressive blue eyes met Arthur’s watery, resolute gaze. Without a word, she raised the glass to her lips and took a slow, deliberate sip. The taste was sharp, sweet, and intoxicatingly pure—a stark contrast to the bitter poison of the life she had been forced to endure for the past six years.

As Chloe lowered the glass, a collective hush fell over the room once more. Every eye was glued to her, waiting for something—anything—to happen.

Natalie watched her, panting heavily, her chest heaving beneath the embroidered silk of her wedding dress. A cruel, hysterical laugh escaped Natalie’s lips. "See? Nothing! Absolutely nothing happened! You’re both insane! This is a sick joke, a publicity stunt gone wrong!"

But Arthur didn’t blink. He slowly turned his head to face Natalie, a terrifying, humorless smile spreading across his lips.

"Nothing yet, my dear," Arthur whispered. "The poison in that glass isn't physical. It’s truth. And truth has a funny way of making the guilty choke."
