Chapter 5 - THE BETRAYAL OF THE INNER CIRCLE

As the federal agents closed in around Natalie, the rats began to desert the sinking ship.

Victoria Vance, Natalie’s mother and the mastermind behind the face-swapping identity theft operation, pushed her way through the panic-stricken crowd from the VIP lounge. Her face, stretched taut by expensive surgical procedures, was drenched in cold sweat.

"Stop!" Victoria shrieked, throwing herself between the federal agents and her sobbing daughter. "You can’t do this! We protected this family! We kept the empire together when Arthur was half-dead from his stroke! You owe us everything!"

Arthur turned his gaze toward his daughter-in-law, his eyes narrowing into cold, glittering slits. "You poisoned my coffee for three years, Victoria. You thought I didn't know about the slow-acting sedatives administered by your private nurse? You thought an old man in a wheelchair couldn't coordinate an international forensic investigation right under your nose?"

Victoria froze, her mouth agape, color instantly draining from her face. The terrifying realization that the patriarch had been playing chess while she played checkers crashed down upon her with the weight of a falling mountain.

"Arrest them both," Marcus commanded, his voice steady despite the tears streaming down his weathered cheeks.

Two female federal agents stepped forward, their hands resting on their tactical belts. Natalie thrashed and screamed like a caged animal, kicking her designer heels against the polished marble floor, her bridal gown tearing as she was forcefully pulled away from the dais. Her mascara ran down her cheeks in black streaks, stripping away the last vestige of the untouchable socialite facade.

"You won't get away with this!" Natalie shrieked, her voice echoing down the grand hallway as she was dragged toward the elevators. "I'll ruin you all! I'll destroy Vance Global from the inside out! You hear me? Clara, you pathetic whore, I'll kill you! I'll kill you!"

The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut, cutting off her hysterical screams. Silence descended once more upon the Grand Astoria Ballroom, save for the heavy breathing of the remaining guests and the soft, ambient hum of the chandeliers.

Chloe stood in the center of the room, still holding the silver tray and the half-empty glass of champagne. Her hands were no longer shaking. A profound, terrifying sense of calm washed over her. She looked down at her simple pink dress, then up at the towering crystal chandeliers that had once seemed so impossibly out of reach. She wasn't Chloe, the obedient servant. She wasn't Maddison, the scapegoat. She was Clara Sterling, and the empire was finally back in her hands.
