Chapter 3 - THE FROZEN SCENE AND THE ACTING MASTERCLASS

"Khloe!"
The roar of raw panic echoed through the suite, cutting through the heavy, tense air like thunder.
Marcus Thorne stood frozen in the doorway. Still wearing his immaculate black tuxedo from the gala, his broad shoulders tensed, his face completely drained of color as his dark, piercing eyes took in the horrific scene unfolding before him.
A fraction of a second behind him, event coordinator Elaine Parker stopped dead in her tracks, her hand flying up to cover her mouth as a muffled shriek escaped her lips.
Nobody spoke. Nobody moved. For several long, agonizing seconds, the entire room looked like a frozen photograph of a catastrophic disaster.
On the cold marble floor, Khloe lay crumpled among glittering shards of broken glass, her white silk maternity dress badly wrinkled and stained with dust. Just a few feet away, Isabella stood towering above her in her blood-red gown, her chest heaving, breathing heavily from the exertion of her violent assault.
Marcus’s gaze traveled slowly from the broken glass on the floor... up to his wife’s tear-stained, agonized face... and finally settled on Isabella.
In that single, agonizing fraction of a second, every piece of the puzzle clicked into place in Marcus’s razor-sharp mind. He didn't need an explanation. He didn't need a witness statement. The body language, the physical destruction, the stark contrast between his battered wife and the aggressive posture of the woman standing over her told a story that could not be faked.
This wasn't a casual disagreement. This wasn't a tragic accident or an unfortunate misunderstanding.
This was a calculated, vicious attack.
A dark, dangerous shadow crossed Marcus’s face—the terrifying expression of a multi-billionaire predator whose most cherished treasure had just been threatened. His muscles tensed, and he took a slow, heavy step forward into the room, his eyes locked onto Isabella with a look that promised absolute, unmitigated destruction.
Isabella saw the look in his eyes. She saw the realization dawning on him, and for a split second, a flash of genuine panic crossed her features. She knew that if Marcus reached her in that state, her life—and her family's social standing—were completely over.
But Isabella Rossi was not just a socialite; she was a master manipulator, a seasoned actress of high society who had survived years of corporate and social backstabbing by twisting narratives to her advantage.
In the blink of an eye, her entire demeanor transformed.
The cruelty vanished from her face as if it had never existed. Her eyes instantly welled up with large, convincing tears. Her lower lip began to tremble violently. Her shoulders slumped into an attitude of pure, helpless vulnerability.
She took a staggering step backward, pressing her back against the wall, and pointed a trembling, manicured finger directly down at Khloe on the floor.
"She attacked me!" Isabella gasped, her voice cracking with manufactured terror and heartbreaking betrayal. "Oh God... Marcus, thank goodness you're here! She... she went completely crazy!"
Marcus froze in his tracks, his eyes narrowing as Isabella continued her theatrical performance.
"I came up here to check on her, to see if she needed help," Isabella sobbed, fat tears rolling smoothly down her powdered cheeks, "and out of nowhere, she flew into a rage! She started screaming, throwing things, smashing the glass! She lunged at me, and I... I was only trying to defend myself! I swear to you, Marcus, I didn't mean to hurt her, but she threw herself against the table!"
Her voice was soft, trembling, and disturbingly convincing. If you hadn't seen the malice in her eyes just moments before, you would have believed she was the victim.
Behind Marcus, Elaine Parker looked back and forth between them, her eyes wide with confusion. For a moment, the entire room fell into an uneasy, suffocating silence. Some people hearing that performance might have doubted; some might have hesitated.

Isabella gave a quiet, inner sigh of relief. She thought her lies had won the day.
She had no idea how terribly, irrevocably wrong she was.
