Chapter 6 - Stepping Into Sterling Tower and Meeting the Board

The sheer scale of Sterling Tower took Megan's breath away as she stepped out of the private elevator on the forty-second floor. The lobby was a masterpiece of modern architecture—polished black granite floors, floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the sprawling Boston harbor, and minimalist chrome accents that reflected the morning light.
A sleek receptionist with a welcoming smile immediately stood up as Megan approached.
"Miss Carter? Welcome to Sterling Enterprises. Mr. Sterling has been expecting you," the receptionist said politely, gesturing toward a set of towering double mahogany doors at the end of the corridor. "Please go right in."
Megan smoothed down her blouse, took a deep breath, and pushed the heavy doors open.
The executive office was vast, filled with rare art pieces, shelves lined with leather-bound financial journals, and a massive glass desk overlooking the city. Arthur Sterling stood by the window, adjusting the cuffs of his crisp white shirt. When the door clicked shut, he turned around.
"Megan. Right on time. I like punctuality," Arthur said, offering a faint, approving smile.
"Mr. Sterling, thank you for having me," Megan said, stepping further into the room. "I... to be honest, I still feel like I'm walking through a very elaborate dream."
"It's no dream," Arthur replied, walking over to his desk and picking up a thick leather folder. He slid it across the glass surface toward her. "Those are your employment terms for the General Director position of our hospitality division. Read them over carefully."
Megan opened the folder. Her eyes scanned the numbers on the contract, and her breath hitched. The salary was more than she had made in three years combined. There were also clauses for full medical coverage, a housing stipend, and a dedicated educational fund for Ava's future college tuition.
"Mr. Sterling... this is life-changing," Megan whispered, looking up at him with wide eyes. "I don't even know how to thank you."
"You don't need to thank me, Megan. You earned this," Arthur said, his voice firm and unwavering. "My mother has an incredible instinct for character. She told me last night that out of all the people in Back Bay, you were the only one who possessed the moral compass to run our establishments with honor. We are simply correcting an oversight in our corporate structure."
Just then, a sharp knock echoed at the double doors, and without waiting for permission, the office door swung open.
An older man in an expensive gray tweed suit strode into the room, his face flushed with indignation. It was Richard Sterling, Arthur’s uncle and the senior member of the board of directors.
"Arthur, what is the meaning of this madness?" Richard barked, marching straight toward the desk before stopping abruptly as he noticed Megan standing there. He sneered, looking her up and down with undisguised contempt. "Who is this? A waitress? Why is a waitress standing in the executive suite?"
Arthur’s expression darkened instantly. The relaxed warmth in his posture vanished, replaced by an intimidating, glacial frost.
"Uncle Richard," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a dangerous purr. "This is Megan Carter. And she is our new General Director of Operations for the Back Bay hospitality division."
Richard let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. "Are you out of your absolute mind? You're handing a multi-million-dollar division to a common restaurant server? What kind of joke is this? The board will never approve this appointment!"
"The board answers to the majority shareholder," Arthur replied smoothly, leaning forward across the desk, his dark eyes locked onto his uncle's face. "And as the majority shareholder, my decision is final. Furthermore, your protégé, Frank Sullivan, is currently sitting in a holding cell facing federal embezzlement charges. Would you like to discuss his appointment next?"
Richard’s face drained of color. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. He glared at Megan with pure venom, realizing that the old guard's grip on the company was slipping.
"This is a massive mistake, Arthur. You're bringing street trash into the executive boardroom," Richard hissed under his breath, turning sharply on his heel and storming out of the office, slamming the heavy mahogany doors behind him.
Silence descended upon the room once more.
Megan exhaled a shaky breath she hadn't realized she was holding. "Mr. Sterling, your uncle... he's right. I don't have corporate experience. If I fail, it will reflect poorly on you and your mother."
Arthur walked around the desk, stopping just inches away from her. He looked down into her eyes with absolute conviction.
"You won't fail, Megan," Arthur said quietly. "My family survived because we knew how to spot loyalty, resilience, and genuine heart. Richard only knows how to count coins. Trust yourself. Just as my mother trusted you in the rain."

Megan looked at the contract, then up at the billionaire who had just upended her entire universe. She picked up the heavy silver fountain pen resting on the desk.
"Where do I sign?" she asked.
