Chapter 8 - Cleaning House and Reclaiming Justice

Megan’s first week as General Director of Operations at Sterling Enterprises was nothing short of a baptism by fire. She didn't spend her time hiding behind the luxury glass walls of the forty-second floor; instead, she rolled up her sleeves and dove straight into the trenches of Harbor and Vine and its sister restaurants across Boston.

Her first order of business was dismantling the toxic, corrupt culture that Frank Sullivan had cultivated for years.

Standing in the main dining room of Harbor and Vine, which had been reopened under new interim management, Megan addressed the entire front-of-house and kitchen staff. Dozens of waiters, busboys, and line cooks stood around the room, watching her with a mixture of awe, curiosity, and cautious hope.

"I know what it's like to stand out there on the floor," Megan began, her voice steady and clear, echoing off the restored mahogany walls. "I know what it's like to skip meals to make rent. I know what it's like to have your hard-earned tips stolen by management while you're told to just 'worry about your tables.'"

A murmur of agreement rippled through the staff.

"That ends today," Megan declared firmly. "Effective immediately, our entire payroll system has been restructured. Every single dollar in tips goes directly to the staff who earned them, verified by an independent digital ledger. Furthermore, we are instituting a transparent grievance protocol. If any manager attempts to intimidate, silence, or cheat you, my direct office line is open to every single one of you."

A loud burst of applause erupted from the back of the room, led by a young dishwasher who had once shared his lunch break with Megan during her toughest shifts.

As the meeting wrapped up and the staff dispersed back to their stations, a familiar figure stepped out from the private dining room archway.

Arthur Sterling stood there, holding a clipboard, a warm smile touching the corners of his mouth. "You handled that like a seasoned veteran, Megan. You had the entire room eating out of the palm of your hand."

"I just spoke the truth, Mr. Sterling," Megan said, exhaling a sigh of relief as she leaned against a host stand. "It feels surreal walking back in here after everything that happened just a week ago."

"Well, you earned every inch of it," Arthur said, stepping closer. "And by the way, the internal forensic audit of Richard’s regional accounts just wrapped up. It turns out Frank Sullivan wasn't operating alone."

Megan’s eyes widened. "What do you mean?"

"Frank’s secondary offshore accounts were directly linked to a shell corporation managed by a subsidiary of Richard’s private real estate portfolio," Arthur explained, his voice dropping into a somber, determined tone. "My uncle wasn't just turning a blind eye to the embezzlement; he was taking a percentage of the cut to fund his private property acquisitions."

Megan felt a chill run down her spine. "Does Eleanor know?"

"She knows," Arthur said grimly. "And she gave the order. Richard has been formally stripped of his voting rights on the board, and federal investigators are executing a search warrant on his estate as we speak. The era of corruption in this family is officially over."

Before Megan could process the massive tectonic shift happening within the Sterling dynasty, her phone buzzed in her blazer pocket.

She pulled it out and looked at the screen. It was a text message from her neighbor, Mrs. Gable, who was watching Ava after school.

“Hey Megan! Ava just got home and she is so excited about her new red shoes! She's doing her homework at the kitchen table and wanted me to tell you she loves you!”

A warm, radiant smile broke across Megan’s face, washing away the last remnants of the stress and fear that had haunted her for years.

Arthur watched her expression, his eyes softening. "Everything okay at home?"

"More than okay," Megan looked up, her honey-colored eyes meeting his. "For the first time in years... everything is perfect."
