Chapter 5 - THE FIRST CRACK IN THE PRISON WALLS

The iron gates of the municipal detention center groaned open with a heavy, industrial screech that echoed off the damp concrete walls. I stepped out of the federal vehicle into the biting morning air, holding a manila folder filled with financial affidavits and structural asset transfers. Behind me, the heavy wooden doors of the visiting room slammed shut, sealing away the man who had once treated me like a piece of broken furniture.

Grant sat behind the thick reinforced glass of the visitation booth, his orange jumpsuit hanging loosely over his frame as if he had lost ten pounds of pure panic over the last week. His manicured hands, once used to point accusing fingers and sign fraudulent corporate documents, now gripped the edge of the metal table with whitening knuckles.

"You can't do this, Clara," Grant hissed through the perforated metal speaker box, his voice dripping with venom and raw desperation. "My lawyers say this freeze is unconstitutional. The board has no right to strip my voting shares!"

I leaned closer to the glass, my reflection staring back at me crisp and unyielding, completely devoid of the fear that had once defined our marriage. "Your voting shares were tied to capital acquired through wire fraud, Grant," I said calmly, my voice steady and cold. "The federal government seized every asset before the ink on your arrest warrant even dried. You don't own a single desk in that building anymore."

Grant slammed his palm against the glass, making a sharp, hollow thud that caused the guard standing behind him to step forward with a heavy baton resting on his hip. "I built Whitaker Enterprises! My father laid the stones for that company!"

"Your father built it on stolen patents and rigged municipal bids," I countered, sliding a single photograph across the slot at the base of the partition. "Do you recognize this document, Grant? It's the original ledger from your offshore shell account in the Caymans, signed by your own hand three days before you threw me into the bathroom cabinet."

Grant stared down at the photograph, his eyes widening in sudden, absolute terror as he realized the depth of the trap. "Where... where did you get this? I burned the hard copies!"

"You forgot that I was the one who managed the home office archives while you were busy playing corporate executive," I replied, standing up and smoothing down the front of my wool coat. "You thought I was just a quiet wife hiding in the kitchen. You never bothered to look at what I was reading."

"Clara! Wait! Don't leave me here!" Grant screamed, jumping up from his chair as the guard grabbed his shoulders and forced him back down onto the metal stool.

I didn't look back as I turned away from the glass partition and walked down the long, sterile corridor toward the exit. The first crack in their impenetrable prison wall had widened into a chasm, and Grant was finally beginning to realize that no amount of family wealth or legal maneuvering could save him from the consequences of his own arrogance.
